Tyrone Mings

The defence wasn’t the major issue that needed sorting this Summer. It was the midfield. Adding Carlos is nice and you can always improve but Mings was part of a defence a couple of years back heralded as one of the best in the league.

Until our manager/board/whoever realise that they need two better central midfielders to play alongside Kamara, we’ll never see much improvement.

Creating this massive problem, both in a PR and playing sense, by taking the captaincy from Mings and giving it to McGinn was absolutely f****** mental. I’m trying to back Gerrard as much as I can but that decision alone defies believe and only an absolute moron would publicly call out one of your better/popular players, strip him of the captaincy and give it to a bloke who shouldn’t even be starting.

Even as I type it, it beggars belief.

This. How can we all see this and yet  the football management and board can't? Luiz and McGinn together doesn't work, and hasn't worked for 3 years.

He’s being linked to West Ham. Not particularly reliably. I could see him moving on. What a shame.

He’d be a big player for West Ham probably suit their style and would get back into the England squad.

If that’s the case then he really should be more careful with his words.

I still don't go for the analysis that he misspoke (not what you are saying).

He might not have said exactly what he wanted to say - and that is a massive problem for a high profile manager in the highest profile league in the world. Frankly, if he can't communicate effectively under pressure - time for a career change.
But he clearly has a personal issue with Mings, and he is allowing that to play out publicly. That is hugely unprofessional and will have a negative effect on every other player in the squad (perhaps excluding Countiho), as they worry that they could be next.
I have never heard anyone say anything other than good things about Mings the person and leader - so there is no excuse for Gerrard to call him out. Even if Mings has been a muppet privately, Gerrard should be professional - as the best he's achieved right now is a devaluing of an asset. At worst, he's disrupted the squad and undermined his own authority.

Yeah that’s what I mean, if it’s simply something about an injury and not a big deal then his choice of words was absolutely terrible

I'm Team Mings and if he's still here when the window closes he will outlast Gerrard.

The dilemma for Mings is if he stays to fight for his place and doesn’t play much, he’ll miss the World Cup.

If he is dropped again in Saturday maybe an outbreak of chanting One Tyrone Mings in the 5th minute 😛

I know you’re half joking but I really hope we don’t see any of this kind of nonsense.

They were and sometimes managers can speak too much.  I understood it as him saying Mings will want to play even if he is injured. But if he can look me in the eye (as in be totally honest with me) and tell me he’s ready (as in 100% fit) he’ll play.

That was my interpretation of it. You look people in the eye when telling the truth.

Of course there will be when he is fit. It’s the media and fans that have blown this up. He’s part of the squad, he’s just not 100% fit.

If he wasn’t fit why was he on the bench?

I don’t know but it’s not unknown for big players to be on the bench even though not 100% fit.  Maybe it’s important to have him around the squad ?

It’s a shame journalists don’t ask the manager these type of questions.

There’s a risk he’ll miss it anyway as he was dropped by Southgate before being dropped by Gerrard, but Mings would obviously at least want to fight for it.

If Mings simply wasn’t fit enough to start, I think that would have been explained by Gerrard in his interviews.

Instead we got a cryptic “looks me in the eye and shows that he’s ready to play” quote from SG. To me that says there has been a fallout and Mings has been dropped.

This. The 'injury' has been conjured up to save face.

There’s still room for Ty in the squad. It can be fixed.

Not sure that's the issue.

We have a 29 year old recent England international in a ridiculous price market, with I think 2 years of his contract left. His asking price will not increase from here. We have youngsters coming through, and 5 centre backs in the first team squad. If we've decided it's time to move him on - make some very good money and upgrade - then I'm all for that. Everybody is replaceable. It would be the right thing for the club, and the player - and he should leave with our thanks for his service to the club, his leadership and his efforts.

The issue for me is that he seems to be being treated badly by a manager, who seems to have a grudge, and we don't know why.

We are Aston Villa - we are better than how our manager has acted towards our former captain.

If we need to get rid of some defenders, I’d be getting rid of Hause and Konsa before Mings.

Me too - but sometimes the only way to improve the team is to take someone out who you can sell for good money, and upgrade.
My guess is we can get £25m-£30m for Mings. I suspect we'd only get about £5m for Hause. That extra £20m is how the club can run effectively.

Plus - Hause seems reasonably content to be 4th choice. I doubt Mings will be right now.

Look at Coady to Everton - he wants to play and go to a world cup. I'm sure Mings is the same.

The role of being a perpetual sub is a specific role - like the specialist 3rd choice keeper.
Step forward Tom Heaton, Scott Carson, Stuart Taylor - all of whom preferred to being 3rd choice in the Champions League than 2nd choice in the Premier League.
