From the information available it is simply that the club didn't believe he was the right person for the job and he is no longer in the position. That is how well managed successful companies operate. This is positive news for AVFC Agreed if it's Deans decision. If somebody else is calling those same decisions and taking it out if Deans hands it's a different thing for me. It may well still be the right call, but it does change the context

Can't be sure of course but it's hard to believe this was DSs decision alone. I would agree that the head coach should appoint the coaches but they also must fit into the style of football determined by the DoF as his role is to mandate this. If DS was against ROK leaving then I would say his position was untenable and he would have left too. I expect that DS 'agreed' to ROK leaving. I think it is becoming clear that DS will be under a lot of pressure to deliver next season
VillaChris
Yeah strange one for me aswell. Can understand Terry leaving as he's on a different path and dosen't have the same attachment to Dean but O'Kelly nearly 60, last was manager at Hereford in 2012 and worked with Dean since at Walsall and Brentford. Interesting one, expecting an Athletic piece in next few days. We've gone from having a very strong backroom team to just now Shakey and Cutler also offering advice so need to get some fresh voices in a.s.a.p. thabucks
Terry imo was there for the cameras as much as his coaching insight … Stature within the game as a great CB aside not sure what we will miss and I read somewhere that there would be further restructuring of the coaching department post Terry…Be interesting what effect ROK will have … And I’m sure it’s just a honourable I’ll do pre - season then I’m afraid guv I’m done for whatever reason… Good luck & Health ! Villan_of_oz Posted August 12, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted August 12, 2021 Thanks RoK for everything you did for our club. Came in at a difficult time and always seemed a calm influence in the coaching staff. All the best for whatever the future holds.

Has recently had a second grandchild and wants to spend more time with family. Absolutely nothing untoward. Also heard that Jedinak may be making the step up and has been around the first team more and more the past two weeks. Imagine having to report to Mile Jedinak after a game to explain why you were shit?

TimTort
My brother in law is a big Brentford supporter and he said that Smith and O’Kelly worked really closely at Brentford, even sharing a house in the area. They’d had a similar working relationship at Walsall and so assuming that continued here, I can’t for a moment believe that it was Smith who wanted to propose the U23 role. Vive_La_Villa
Might sound a bit harsh but it always kind of felt to me like ROK was only in the job because of how close he was to Smith. Good Luck to him for whatever he has planned next.

It's the done thing In America for instance and can work just as well in Football too. You have coaches that will work with just offensive linemen, linebackers, backs, wide receivers, cornerbacks etc. Rather than general coaches. You need guys to have an overview too, like head coaches and assistant coaches. I think it's the way it's going. We have hired a set piece coach for instance. I've always wondered why football doesn't do more of this. Yes the squads are significantly smaller than an NFL roster, but the idea of coaches specialising in set positions makes a lot of sense.

It may well still be the right call, but it does change the context why is it any different to signing players? those that are old school should want the manager to sign the players too. that's not 100% the case at villa as we know and lange is heavily involved in recruitment, so the same rule should apply to the coaching staff. dean has bought into this model so he would have no problem with RoK being demoted, forced out or whatever. the same as when lange finds him a better CM than McGinn who smith clearly loves. we wont move forward unless we have the best players and best coaches we can. i don't want them to stay at the club just cause they're deano's mates...we need the best people for the job thanks for the efforts Richard, but no room for sentiment here. I’m sure I read somewhere once that Liverpool have a throw in coach. I also think they are one of the best teams around at taking advantage of no offsides in throw ins.
