KevinRichardsonsMoustache
As with all of the deepest relationships you have in life, Doug’s time with Villa was full of the usual ups and downs. His commitment to that relationship with villa, though, was never in question. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and our most recent owners have given us food for thought. It’s foolish to think that our readings of history can’t change based on our context. At the time of the Robbie Keane/Muzzy Izzet thing, I was furious with Doug and couldn’t wait for Randy to take over. Overall, though, he clearly committed himself to the club and that is something that I’ll always respect. More than anything, this is a time to think of Doug’s family. Whatever our thoughts on the man, there’s a family that is grieving today for a father, grandfather, uncle etc who has passed away. A little respect is therefore desirable, even if that’s just for today.
Rugeley Villa
Villa through and through. Good times, and bad times. Big part of the clubs history, and a genuine character and football man. RIP old boy.

He had his shortcomings as an owner but no one can take away from him the love he had for the club. RIP Doug Spot on....I said as much the other day on here. We were never saw such dire financial problems under his ownership. He also appointed some good managers and won a trophy or two along the way! hogso
I was fond of the occasions I would spot his car, with the iconic AV1 reg plate, at games be they home or away. Perhaps the last time I saw it was a the playoff final? His blood truly ran claret and blue. RIP Dead Doug.

Popular Post KenjiOgiwara
Didn't he actually take money out of the club? He loved the club no doubt, but making him out to be some kinda great servant is a bit too much. I will never speak ill of the dead, and have no interest doing it here, but when most of the fan base absolutely hated him for years and years I find this thread rather funny.
Popular Post Hev
Here is my little tale about Doug. I was at a Villa Awards Night Dinner one year (it was the year JPA won player of the year so naturally I was there :-)) - early 2000's I guess. Anyway, I had been to the ladies' and on my way back to our table, I had to walk between other tables. Anyway, Doug was doing a bit of "mingling" and talking to the tables and I needed to get past him so I said "Excuse Me Mr Ellis" and he said "oh you want to come past?" - "Please" said I - "OK but give us a kiss first" - so I had to give him a little peck on the lips! Anyway, he was Villa through and through and we often used to see him being driven up or down various motorways in AV1 as we were driving to away games. We would always wave as AV1 cruised past our little car and he would always wave back. RIP Doug 1 4

Popular Post markavfc40
I don't think there is much more to say as it has all been said. Personally I think he took far more out of Aston Villa than what he ever put in and his running of the club was as much about feeding his ego and what was best for Doug Ellis as it was about what was best for Aston Villa. Despite what I have said above I do think he had a genuine affection for the club. As part of a work related issue I actually went to his house in Four Oaks around 5 or 6 years ago and spent around 2 hours with him talking about Aston Villa (the first thing he asked was who I supported) and he told me a number of tales and you could sense his feelings for the club. He had a great innings. RIP Doug.

villabromsgrove
Rest in Peace Doug. He enjoyed his life and Villa was a huge part of it, because of the platform for fame that it gave him. He enjoyed being "Mr Villa" and milked it for all it was worth, but in his own patriarchal style he considered Aston Villa his home, and loved it. I wanted Doug out and shouted it vociferously on many occasions, but he's out lasted me as a Villa regular and I'm 25 years younger. I shook hands with him on the day he introduced MON to the press and he was bursting with pride, even though he knew his days as Villa supremo were over. Doug was a vain arrogant man who never the less had a very charitable side to him away from Villa. For all his many faults he will remain a large part of our history. As Trent said, the timing of his passing is typically "Doug". He loved to grab the limelight.
