Popular Post Ingram85
I remember two Dougs. The tight fisted miser who wouldn’t cough up an extra 500k to get Robbie Keane in his prime, the Doug who let Juninho slip through his fingers plus the other stuff described above in better detail by other posters. Then I remember the Doug who I met at VP around ‘93 I think who spent 10 minutes chatting with me as an 8 year old and then took me and my dad to meet Bosnich in the club shop and wished us well. The early to mid nineties was when my love for villa grew as a small kid and it coincided with some truly memorable years under Big Ron, Little, Gregory etc... since then apart from a few years under O’Neill it’s all been shit. He kept us running and afloat and a mainstay in the Premier League. The others since haven’t. I’ll remember both sides of the man. Good and bad. For me though he was the man who looked after the villa in the 90’s but wouldn’t spend any bloody money. Yes I know he relegated us and all else that came before my time as a young fan but based solely on my happy childhood supporting Villa before it all went crap, I can’t deny I’m sad about his passing. RIP Deadly. Edited October 11, 2018 by Ingram85
Popular Post DaveAV1
I knew a guy, who has sadly recently also passed away, who had the maintenance contract for Four Oaks Estate for many years. One night during a storm a tree blew down across a road and so he and his guys were out in the small hours with chainsaws clearing the road. Then this figure appeared carrying a tray of whiskeys. “I didn’t realise it was this windy until I heard your chainsaws, so I thought you might like a drink.” It was Doug. I have a few Doug stories some showing him in a better light than others. But there are worse men about than Doug, and some of them have been our owner. He always said he’d be carried out in a box and the old bugger was true to his word. RIP Doug, gone but not forgotten.

VillaCas
94 is a good innings and he seemed in decent-ish health throughout I met him a few times - slightly odd and a very big ego but he became part of the furniture at VP RIP Doug

TOTTI-THE-GOD
I remember back around 1991 pro set cards were all the rage, Villa were doing a card giveaway at the end of one of the home games , me , my mum and one of my mates stayed behind to try and get some only to find in typical Villa style it was extremely badly organised and it got a bit messy a lot of kids getting crushed and we came away rather disappointed. My Mum wrote an angry letter to Doug complaining about it all , Doug wrote an apology letter including 3 tickets to the last game of the season against Chelsea in the upper north stand in which we drew 2-2 having been 2 nil down at half time (2 goals from Cascorino who'd of thought that). It was good of Doug to of written back to us and even better to of given us free tickets. There were always times that I felt he was holding us back but at the same time I've always felt that in our current situation I don't think we'd of got relegated with him in charge (before you say it , yes I know we got relegated in the 80's under him). MachoFantastico
Sad news indeed, my old Uncle use to cut his hair back in the day and he use to talk all things Villa with him. Looking back, for all the crap the fans gave him (justified or not) he didn't do bad at all running the club considering how things have been since he sold the club. Hope the fans show him ultimate respect. Edited October 11, 2018 by MachoFantastico

imavillan
love him or loathe him, he always appeared to do the best for Villa....i think.. Amongst other things, I'll remember the managers getting the ''come round and look at the roses in my garden'' call only to get the sack. NurembergVillan Posted October 11, 2018 Moderator Share Posted October 11, 2018 RIP Doug. By all accounts your charity work was exceptional, and people I admire such as Brian Little speak highly of you as a man. Your stewardship of AVFC is a fitting reflection of the club as a whole, really. Never quite reached the heights it should have, despite plenty of opportunities. That said you'll always be a legend in my eyes, if only for having the bollocks to give the Queen a copy of your autobiography Sir Doug Ellis Standers In The Sky
