Or even the England first team

I know you are joking but that's never going to happen. Whatever people think of Southgate he's been there done it as a player smith hasn't.

Means nothing really Steven Gerrard , Frank Lampard,  Roy Keane all been and done it as players,  Jose Mourinho , Unai Emery , Jurgen Klopp played a similar level to Smith.

A team of Englands quality should be winning it, the pool of players England have to chose from is massive, they don’t have to scour the lower leagues for players like Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Northern Ireland . It’s a bit like Man City reaching a Champions League final and boasting that they did well to get there.  Wales and Scotland even qualifying for major tournaments is a huge achievement given they players they have to chose from . England on paper with the quality they have to chose from is the Man City of International football but unfortunately they’re a bit Spursy they always come up short and until they win a major tournament will remain the butt of all jokes

isnt ROK retired though?

He's gone back in to help out Walsall for last few games but basically yes unless he's refused to join up with DS again due to the way he was demoted here. Who knows.

Norwich was a way lower salary than what he had here. Not sure what he's on at Leicester but probably less than Rodgers with a competitive staying up bonus.

He's hardly just taking jobs to get a decent pay off a year later like Steve Bruce became master of in last decade of management.

Why chose DS then when Eddie Howe will be available in a few years. He'd probably have a couple of years of CL on his CV by then aswell.

If it's Gerrard, Lampard and DS as the three options you take Smith all day long as he can actually coach on a training pitch. However I think if England have a vacancy around summer 2024 they'll have a decent set of candidates to approach as Potter will be back in management by then and will probably be doing o.k at side with much less pressure and some semblance of strategy than what he had at Chelsea.

so if we're saying a team near the bottom of the PL is a 'shit job' what exactly would be a 'good job' that smith could realistically get?

you expect him to sit around with his feet up waiting for someone like wolves, palace or fulham to sack their managers and maybe consider him (but probably wont)?

you've mentioned smith earning good money a few times recently...news flash...PL footbal managers earn lots of money. it can't be a shock to you

Why does the manager have to be English? Yes Sven and Capello didn’t do well but that’s years ago, the majority of players at club level are coached by foreigners . The pool of English players to choose from is second to none but the pool of English managers to choose from is of a low standard and very limited.

They don't have to be English but I'd always prefer to see that if the current pool is decent and would be silly to ignore Howe if he's out of work when he's re-established his reputation at Newcastle pretty emphatically.

The coaching talent pool was really bad in early 2000s so wasn't a shock FA went foreign then. McClaren, Big Sam, Curbishley in mid 2000s was a bit of a laughable selection aswell, O'Neill probably should've got the job then as he was interviewed aswell but probably sent FA to sleep talking about his Clough anecdotes.

Steve Cooper could be outside bet aswell as he's previously been in FA coaching set up and did well with under 20s I think.

Guess you can rule Potter and Howe out from ever managing England then.
