Against Leeds and southampton be wasn't doing that and if he isn't doing that he doesn't offer much else. I only listened to both games but it seemed to me as if we were playing the same shape - Luiz at "6", SJM at "8" and Barkley at "10" - so SJM, in theory, should be doing the same role as he did against Liverpool? Do you think there was a tactical switch that some him playing in a different way/role or was it just that his game was off? If the former, how do you perceive that we were set up? We have specialist players on the bench and they cna help us in different situations. We were chasing the game so why didn't we bring on hourihane. He creates loads of chances with his set pieces. He makes it harder to put a foul in on jack because he can play a great ball. Against a team where we are winning and it is close nakamba can do a job. Hause is one of the best players ata winning the ball in the air in the world. Yes he needs to improve the direction and his passing but he is useful against a lot of teams. Engels was a solid cb when fit. Davis foot everything but finishing. If we aren't expecting him to score he is a great sub option. If watkins or grealish are on the pitch he can get the ball to them. He doesn't have to finish it himself. Elmo, Guilbert both solid - good premier league right backs. Elmo is a very good crosser. And guilbert is very good defensively and his overlapping makes him a threat even if he has no end product as it creates space for others.

Dean Smith stated after the Liverpool result that he went with 2 6's and one 10. So two defensive mids and one attacking mid. Against Leicester we lined up the same but were struggling so he switched to one 6 and two 8's. Then against Leeds and the first half against Southampton he continued with one 6 and two 8s. The second half against saints we went back to two 6s and one 10. Hope that clears up the confusion!!

Thank you. Very clear. For me, it needs to be two 6's and a 10. Barkley doesn't do enough defensively to be an "8" and SJM is better coming from a deeper position and being disruptive. I would actually say he is an 8 when he plays that role - i.e. he starts deeper than the "10" and has more defensive duties but is much better at breaking/getting forward than the other "6". I thought the shift in the Leicester game was probably more due to Barkley not being 100% although my perception is an "8" has to work harder?? More than anyone but Carroll who had 15. In terms of everyone in the prem just per game (can't find the rest of the per 90 statistics) Deeney finished first with 7.3. And hause also had the highest success percentage in the league in terms of aerial duels 80% I don't know anyone else's percentages but that is pretty good. Edit:Correcting stats I misremembered hause's header stats Edited November 8, 2020 by MotoMkali Changed 10.1 to

Lord Willard
He is so crucial to us. If he plays well, the team plays well.
mikeyp102
Unlucky to have the goal ruled out, I thought for 20 minutes after that he wasn’t in the game. That backpass could’ve been punished. But then he rolled someone with his arse, and gained confidence. Then he was back to his non stop energy and effectiveness
Tomaszk
The spare part who can do any role in the side and must start every game. Showed off some great passing today. Is the run into the box when he slipped over twice anywhere? Would have been goal of the decade.

Johnnyp
Needs to play CM. That's his position for me. When you look back at his Hibs days he was a CM. Came here and got into advanced positions because we had such little going forward and it kinda snowballed. Was excellent tonight.
Vive_La_Villa
I still think it’s no coincidence that when he plays well the whole team plays well. He is so important to us doing well.

bose
Three international matches for him in the next 6 days. Understandable that he'll play 90 mins in the playoff game tomorrow but I hope he gets a rest in the next two matches. I absolutely loath the Nations League, ridiculous to have it now in the current circumstances. If he plays 3x 90 mins I bet Smith will be furious. Needs to start taking a leaf out of the Ryan Giggs/Roy Keane international games playbook. For the meaningless games, just say he's tweaked a muscle or something. It'll benefit him in the long run.
