Jareth
Worth a watch - now that it is 'ok' to do this on TV. https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/mar/14/the-holy-land-and-us-review-this-taboo-busting-look-at-israel-and-palestine-isnt-afraid-of-controversy The Holy Land and Us follows British Jews whose family histories pivot around Israel and the impulse to defend it, but it states unabashedly that the creation of Israel came at grave cost to the Arab communities who had previously been the majority population in the area. This is what the Arab world calls the Nakba – “the catastrophe” – from which Palestinians have never recovered. The term is taboo in large parts of the media; that The Holy Land and Us references it in its opening minutes is a sign that it is ready to face criticism and try to cut a path to the truth. Britons with Palestinian heritage also feature; representatives of both groups visit the region in search of their forebears’ legacy.
villakram
Further positive developments in the middle east, with fresh diplomatic ties between Syria and Saudi Arabia on the cards. https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20230320-report-saudi-to-reopen-consulate-in-syria/ "Saudi Arabia plans to reopen its consulate in the Syrian capital, Damascus, nearly 12 years after it was closed due to the outbreak of the civil war, Russia's Sputnik news agency reported. The agency quoted sources as saying that the kingdom may reopen the consulate in Damascus after the Eid Al-Fitr holiday, which follows the holy month of Ramadan. According to the agency, mediation efforts led by Russia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have culminated in overcoming obstacles facing the two Arab countries, pointing out that the step comes after the deal reached between Iran and Saudi Arabia to restore diplomatic relations." Jareth
Meanwhile Netanyahu is on his way to the UK for a meeting. I hope he's given hell. That said - this is class Benjamin Netanyahu has been forced to delay his visit to Britain as a number of Israeli pilots have refused to fly him, the Telegraph understands. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/03/23/benjamin-netanyahu-uk-trip-threat-pilots-judicial-reform/ (is it ok to be critical of Israel if the intelligent people there are liberal?) sne
Quote Israeli forces launch biggest military operation in West Bank’s Jenin since 2002 Israeli forces launched what a military source said is its largest military operation in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin in more than 20 years, killing at least eight people and injuring about 80 others, according to Palestinian officials. Videos obtained by CNN from Jenin show Israeli bulldozers tearing up streets to disarm IEDs, as well as Israeli tanks outside the city limits. Residents told CNN they heard explosions and heavy gunfire in the area, while video from the scene showed wounded Palestinians being evacuated by ambulance to Jenin Government Hospital. Five of those killed were teenagers, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said. A ninth Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli forces near Ramallah in the West Bank in a separate incident, according to the health authorities. https://edition.cnn.com/2023/07/02/middleeast/israel-jenin-camp-idf-raid-west-bank-intl-hnk/index.html

Popular Post Jareth
Hardly surprising when your lives are so completely repressed and controlled by your neighbour. Pretty sure a war is what Israel want, they’ve been provoking this at speed since the far right came to power there.
chrisp65
I’m not sure it can be called a war when one side is an industrialised nation with the latest equipment taking land from the locals that have vastly inferior arms but are in an existential crisis so have no choice but to fight with whatever they have. It would be like european gunboats 150 years ago claiming to be in a war against men with spears, having taken the land and resources from the men with spears.

I mean yes to the point about imbalance and oppression… but when Hamas fires (they say) 5000 rockets indiscriminately across the border, sends armed gunmen to go on an indiscriminate shooting spree and hostage taking spree, and when they’re joined in that by Islamic Jihad, I personally think they perhaps did make some choices and that other choices were available. The normal people of Palestine deserve far far better than brutal Israeli oppression and far far better than sectarian Islamic jihadists and murderous Hamas loons.

Hmmm, the Palestinians have made bad choices. What was the peaceful legal route to getting their land and their homes back that they missed? From the Balfour Declaration to now, what errors by the Palestinians have lead to their current situation? Perhaps if they just held peace vigils like the people from Diego Garcia they’d have their homes back now? If all the people of Lancashire were moved to Blackpool, with minimal health care, intermittent water supply, poor schooling, poor prospects, no economy. If that happened do you imagine there would spring up a peace movement and a people’s democracy of Blackpool to campaign peacefully through legal channels?
