Chindie Posted May 10, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted May 10, 2021 I should have added that that raid after Friday prayers was at the end of Ramadan. And the al-Aqsa mosque is one of the most sacred places in the Islamic faith. So it's a small step down from something like police raiding the Vatican just after midnight mass.

Stinks like the orange order marches during the 80s/90s and the official backing/stench associated with them.

villakram
9 children amongst the dead from IDF overnight bombing. Just a little collateral damage though because they did get some Hamas bad men too.
Chindie Posted May 11, 2021 VT Supporter Share Posted May 11, 2021 Wholly successful mission. Some dead bad guys and a message about the value of all of your lives sent. Which will beget more violence, which will justify the further 'cleansing'.
villakram
Useful context provided by Juan Cole below. "This would be as though Israeli commandos had invaded the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome during Easter services, shooting rubber bullets and throwing stun grenades and flash bombs." https://www.juancole.com/2021/05/israelis-attacked-jerusalem.html
ender4
So I’ve vaguely seen bits of what’s happening on the news. Can someone here give me the real story? What has suddenly caused this latest fighting, bombing, etc

What has suddenly caused this latest fighting, bombing, etc Tensions have been rising due a couple of matters - predominately a long running and bitter legal dispute, and Israeli police actions during Ramadan. The legal dispute, long story short, relates to a properties in a disputed section of Jerusalem. East Jerusalem is a particularly contested part of Palestine/Israel - it's predominately occupied by Palestinians, but was annexed in the 60s by the Israelis (who now celebrate that with a nationalist 'holiday', which was the other day...) as Israel claims Jerusalem, in it's entirety, is it's capital - whilst the Palestinians hope that Jerusalem will be their capital one day. This is a long running conflict and in essence the Israelis have tried to force the Palestinians from the area via various means, the most contentious of which is to claim that the property the Palestinians live in is actually owned by Jews and therefore they can evict the occupants. They've done this to a few properties in the last few years and one of the more contentious of these ended up in court, which was due to release a verdict right when this all kicked off. The suspicion is, given that Israel has effectively slowly crushed the Palestinians here by refusing building permits (and granting Israeli ones), the Palestinians will lose. This caused tensions that lead to the events on Friday. On that day, after Friday prayers at the al-Aqsa mosque (one of the holiest sites in Islam, and also a holy site in Judaism), on one of the most important days of Ramdan, a number of worshippers effectively sat in after prayers in protest to the evictions and illegal settling of Palestinian land. The Israeli police responded by raiding it, firing rubber bullets and throwing stun grenades, in a overly heavy handed and frankly unnecessary show of aggression. This resulted in Palestinians kicking off back, and Hamas launched it's pretty feeble rockets in retaliation. So Israel sent the bombers in and killed some kids. Again. 1

sne
Think it's all a very familiar and well orchestrated strategy by Netanyahu to help keep him in power and help keep him out of jail. Get the nationalist religious right wing zealots to incite a new intifada for him and keep the status quo for another couple of years.

Yup, that Netanyahu is in all sorts of legal trouble and is having trouble forming a government has nothing to do with this. A big shout out to the Biden administration?/regime? who ran interference at the security council yesterday to ensure that a meagre %$***#$ statement condemning the violence could not be issued.
