HanoiVillan
Oh look, that letter was soooooo 2 hours ago. Now it turns out it was a letter delivered to the Iraqi military by mistake: I'd say this bodes very well for the organisation of the forthcoming military effort.
Awol
If this is poker then it’s a very ballsy call. The Iraqis leverage is now gone, if they go ahead and say they want the coalition out their country then it will look a lot like Syria in short order. If not, they’ll have to say so explicitly and quickly. Either outcome is probably acceptable for Trump. Watching this play out in real time is mind blowing. Popular Post tonyh29
here’s the opinion of my Iranian friend From WhatsApp last tonight , might be of interest hence thought I’d share here...: Another fine mess the Americans are getting us into. The net result will be strengthening of the IRI for two reasons. Firstly, it forces the western allies to leave Iraq and the vacuum will be filled by Iran. Secondly, it completely destroys any chance of uprising against the regime. Even those who are from the old guard living by lake Geneva, namely the Shahs son in law, are calling Soleimani an Iranian soldier. Thirdly, it now forces the hands of the Americans as to how serious or capable they are of stopping the IRI to go full steam ahead nuclear. Once that happens there’s no way anybody can stop the mullahs. This all stems from a fundamental lack of understanding of both culture and politics in the region. The Shia in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria all see themselves as one nation with Iran. This sense of nationhood means they take their command from the clergy in Iran and have no regard for their respective governments. Of course in Iraq and Lebanon they’re in the majority. In short the Shia empire that the IRI wants to build had already been built in the hearts and minds of the people it wishes to subjugate.

I knew there would be someone blaming the people killed, just like at Hillsborough. The fact is that any time you get very large crowds of people in one place crushing deaths become very common if proper crowd control is not in place. See also Roskilde Festival 2000 or Berlin Love Parade 2010.

WTAF. Absolutely insane. Everything they said was a total joke, even Trump had to contain himself from laughing at some of it. It scares me so much that these people are among us. Interesting, and not implausible, but would be interested to know more about the sources involved. Is there any corroboration anywhere? You get the impression that Trump has watched a few too many gangster films.

I've not yet seen corroboration of the exact detail (though I have seen other accounts of Trump demanding Iraq's oil), but sometimes it takes time to emerge, and there would be a spinning operation to discredit anyway. It certainly fits very well with other comments and threats Trump has been reported making over the course of years, but of course any false account would try to reflect that. I'd say not yet proven, but entirely plausible.
