Israel, Palestine and Iran (and Lebanon)

I've just found a report in a French paper that says more than 2,000 Hamas made the attacks - I must admit, I'm still surprised by that number.

Israel I noticed has lowered the reported death toll to around 1,200 and in my head for some reason I'd thought of each Hamas terrorist killing maybe 4 or 5 people each - that's clearly not the case.

It looks like the rounded down figure is because some of the bodies that were difficult to identify were Hamas rather than Israelis - so I'm guessing a lot more of those that attacked Israel were killed than I'd also assumed.

I'm mindful that this isn't a game of numbers and that these are people, but it's odd I think the way the mind fills in ideas of how things actually happen.

That number certainly has my attention - where is it from?

I think it's wrong. Reuters say Hamas sources told them

Quote

Palestinian Islamist group Hamas deployed a force of about 1,000 fighters to stage the most devastating attack on Israel in decades, organising them into specialised units, a source close to the group told Reuters.

Though Israel claims they killed 1500 Hamas fighters inside Israel, but I'm not sure if that's at all credible.

Yep, it appears that the figures from both sides are iffy, if Israel says they’ve killed 1500 fighters on Oct 7th then I’d assume that there’s 2/3s more Hamas soldiers just on the 7th as this is the general figure of warfare, then you’ve got to the near constantly apprehended (probably unjustly) Palestinians in the WB and you’ve got a justice system under very heavy strain.

Not that it excuses Israel’s detention rates tho, and I presume they’re killing Hamas and PIJ fighters first and then likely taking in only people who survive. It’s an all round effed situation.

Scary but actually kind of makes sense he was an advisor on US foreign policy. He's now been arrested. This is one of several videos where he harasses this poor guy.

The restraint shown by the man being abused to not smack the **** out of that racist piece of shit is astonishing.

Good news that the hostage exchange managed to get done and the ceasefire held for the second day.  Was looking a bit iffy earlier.

Also interesting that all the Thai nationals are being released.

I wonder which other countries have hostages? Is there a list compiled somewhere?

I've been watching the Last Leg on Ch4 because it has always politically been involved. It has swerved Gaza. Like completely swerved it -not giving a shit about the underdog -they have always backed the underdog - Why not now? Too hot? It''s quite clear cut.

Genuinely didn't know you could be imprisoned for up to 10 years for throwing stones. Did I read that right?

Yes you could be imprisoned up to 10 years for throwing stones at the Israeli military. However, that’s one of the lighter punishments in the Middle East - trying throwing stones at the Iranian morality police or Saudi security - that’s a guaranteed death sentence.

Actually a lot of the Middle East will put you in jail for much less than throwing stones - trying having an opinion the govt doesn’t agree with, or showing an accidental bit of leg as a woman, or being gay. They’d be lucky to get away with only 10 years in prison.

It’s just generally a **** up region of the world. But I do believe it’ll get better year on year, but very very slowly. Give it 20 or 40 or 60 years.

How utterly moderate. How liberal, how democratic.
