Exactly. They can manage four state budgets on existing reserves, and two years with no gas sales to Europe - at all.

This isn’t a man who lost his mind during lockdown, this is the culmination of a plan many years in the making to restore the Russian Empire.

We’re so post-modern in the West (or our leaders are) that we cannot conceive of people doing this in the (cliche alert) *21st Century!*

it’s our fault, we indulged the weak willed and wooly minded, buying into their BS about a post-force European order. It was then and is now absolute nonsense - as Putin is demonstrating.

If the only price we in the west pay to collectively learn that lesson is the fall of Ukraine then we’ve got off very lightly - with apologies to any Ukrainians.

You seem to know your shit. How do you reckon this is gonna end this time, or is Poland next??

We can't send in the military surely.

Poland is a NATO member. Putin isn't stupid enough to have a crack at NATO as a whole.

The end game is Ukraine becomes Russia again, with an extended guerrilla war putting up resistance. Georgia will be looking over their shoulder.

Long term if Putin does fancy having the full extent of the old empire back, he will have to try to pull nations out of NATO. Given he has history with fermenting discontent in enemy states with troll farms and media manipulation, it's not beyond the realms of doubt. But without that they aren't poking NATO directly.

That had been underlined with Biden pointedly saying troops and supplies are going to the Eastern border of the alliance. It's reinforcing the line that can't be crossed.

Maybe I should've gone to Lidl earlier

It’s close but it’s logical positioning really as the Russians will be looking to pincer into Ukraine. No way that positioning means they are gearing up to attack Poland.

Try to imagine turning up at the Bull Ring and collecting rifles and ammunition to fight and defend Birmingham.

That’s just silly. I’m not going all the way into Bham City centre to collect my guns.  So they do next day delivery to my house?
😜

Just like the build up on the borders of Ukraine were "exercises."

Seems like after a period of intense fighting, Ukrainian forces have won back control of Hostomel airfield on the outskirts of Kiev. @magnkarl you were right on this one!

Now contemplating destroying the airfield so it can't be used again as a landing pad, probably a good idea in the circumstances:

If Pelosi is correct then it’s Hungary next as it is encircled by Russia , Belarus and the Crimea

Tom Tugendhat stands up in the Commons and says 'we can expel Russian citizens - all of them', then a little while later sends the following tweet:

He's honestly such a berk.

Fought his Jacob’s off in Afghan tbf, but again not someone with an ounce of strategic nous - much like most of his ex-mil colleagues in the HoC. They’re an emotionally aggressive lot which is exactly what you want at the pointy end of policy, put not in the people who are making it.

A boring hobby horse of mine that will never ever happen anyway is that 'oratory' shouldn't be allowed in the House of Commons, and that debates should just be clear statements of what people actually propose doing. He got into this muddle because he's off in full flow giving it the righteous preacher man stuff, as he is wont to do. If he'd instead just been saying 'here is what should happen: A, B and C' in plain English it would have been better for everyone.

Way too many people in the Commons who treat it all as halfway between theatre and sermon.
