After attritional warfare in the Donbas, maybe 40k or so combat ready. It's a big chunk of Russia's combat power out of the Donbas. They're all being moved by road too. If this was the plan all along then Hopefully they are in position waiting for Russia to walk into the waiting trap.

villa89
Wouldn't surprise me if Putin is telling Iran, India and Belarus to start making peace talk noises. Russia keeps what they have in the east & crimea and Ukraine retreats. Sanctions get lifted on Russia and what's left of Ukraine gets NATO membership. Would be a good result for Putin but debateable how good for Ukraine...

Ukraine must be quite confident that there is no Russian anti-aircraft in Crimea to be flying over that region? They don’t seem to be using the F16s on the main front line so that part must have all the anti-aircraft stuff, plus I guess Russian planes that they don’t want to engage with. ender4
Any news on what is happening in Kursk? Are Ukraine holding the line or still pushing forward? Is Russia attacking back or just leaving them to the land they’ve taken?

Xann
Russia and Iran aren't natural allies. Russia had a part in the attempted takeover in Khartoum, because Putin needs revenue and Sudan has gold. That's not fitting in with Iran wanting to expand its sphere of influence amongst the Islamic states in the region. They're backing the other side. They have been systematically destroying Russian SAM batteries and radar sites in/around Crimea for the thick end of 12 months, all in preparation for this development. Concurrently they’ve sunk/heavily damaged all the rail carrying ferries plying the Kerch straits, and are methodically destroying Russian fuel storage facilities that can be used to support Crimea. In short, there’s a long term and sophisticated campaign to isolate Crimea and siege it, although that looks a bit different in execution to the old days. If they can make Crimea unsustainable for Russia that creates a huge issue for Putin, and undermines the central purpose and strategic logic (from Russia’s perspective) of the war.
