That wouldn't be the worst thing. It would bring NATO into the war and be the end of Russia.

Best case it'd give NATO a massive bargaining chip towards Russia.

a) Respond in kind and take out the base\airfield where the missile was shot from.

b) Tell Putin that either he withdraws from Ukraine or NATO will respond.

c) Roll Patriot systems over the border into Ukraine.

All outcomes would be lethal to Putin.

The vibe from Russia at the moment is that of Hitler in 1943 sending rockets to London out of spite for losing conventionally.

The missiles today hit very close to the Canadian embassy in Kyiv by the way. Let's hope for more Canadian assistance after this.

Agreed, smacks of desparation and frustration. Again though, no lessons learned from history. The blitz in London did nothing to undermine the resolve of citizens to stop Britain's involvement in WW2, or to soften us up for a sea invasion. Petulance from a child who knows it's bedtime.

Noob question here, but would a strike on a consulate count as an attack on a sovereign Country, or legally is it still Ukraine? I was kind of under the impression that a consulate was a little part of the represented country.

Came up in another topic unrelated to Ukraine (might have been Assange) and the answer was a little bit yes and a little bit no iirc.

Hopefully not enough to trigger Article 5 at any rate. The German embassy in Kyiv was hit this morning.

America has attacked countries for threatening their embassies before. I presume it'll just make NATO push heavier equipment into Ukraine with a focus on anti-missile capability. Ukraine shot down over 30 missiles this morning, each of the missiles cost more than Russia can afford and except for showing what a terrorist state Russia is it's achieved very little.

It's worth remembering that this is how Russia deals with internal issues too. In 2004 in the Beslan School Massacre, the Russian armed forces (led by Putin, of course), would employ flamethrowers and tanks to storm a school full of over 1000 children, leaving 300 people dead, close to 200 of those kids. They didn't even bring ambulances and have them on stand by. The state cleared itself of all wrong doing of course, including firing a T-72 straight into the gymnasium where the kids were mostly held hostage.

(tbf, Putin probably considered these Caucasians to be lesser than Russians)

Complete disregard for human life, nature and the world around them in the Russian national way of life.

It's nuts how effective the Western MANPADS are at taking down missiles. There's videos circulating of normal front line troops taking out several millions worth of missiles with a shoulder held launcher this morning..

The German Air Defence systems aren't related to today's attack, they had been planned for a while, it's just a coincidence. They have actually been manufactured specifically for Ukraine and paid for by German Government. They are a model that the German Armed Forces don't even have yet, the absolutely latest model and they couldn't have been provided earlier because a they need to be manufactured and Ukraine needed to have troops trained to use them.

Lukashenko has ordered his troops deploy with Russian troops “near” Ukraine… is this supposed to be scary?

He sent a diplomatic letter to the Ukrainian Embassy the other day claiming that Ukraine should cease and desist their attempt to invade Belarus.

It will be interesting to see what happens. It could be the end for Luka

He’s backing himself into a corner now as he obviously can’t produce any evidence on an imminent invasion by Ukraine into Belarus.

Maybe he’ll take a lesson from his boss and fire a missile into one of his own towns and blame Ukraine? Maybe Putin will do it for him.

The “near to” Ukraine did make me laugh though as they are literally next door to start with. How was it a threat?

It would shock me if the Belarus troops just went along with it and then just stepped back and let the Russian troops (all recently mobilized) cross into Ukraine and get slaughtered.

Belarusians have no interest in fighting Ukraine. It also wouldn't shock me to see all 3 Belarus battalions fighting on the Ukrainian side to be the ones at the forefront of repelling any attack.
