A US Boeing Sentry and a US Boeing Tanker are flying in circles over Rumania. That’s pretty normal. They were then joined by a plane from the US Navy Lockheed Aries II which apparently specialises in intercepting communications. Nothing special. A plane of unknown type and origin appeared from the sea* off Southern Italy. It then flew at great speed up to the 3 planes and flew in very tight circles at high speed right along the Ukrainian border. It’s now headed away at high speed. Any theories what that could be? @bickster * Either it took off from a carrier or it flew covertly up to that point. You could always try Vessel FInder the marine equivalent of flight radar to look for a carrier in the Med (don't bother, it's shit for military) Sorry, no clue. My guess would be an F35 or US Harrier, or an aircraft with jamming kit on a pod, probably as fighter defensive escort. The reason for the sudden appearance on the app/ site will be mode S IFF/SSR turned off up to that point to avoid being seen by transponder tracking sites and anyone looking at them.
Amsterdam_Neil_D
I think Russia is going to try and self insure their own oil tankers for $100Billion. These will go to China and India. There is no reason to let the ships go to India. Just stop them as Russia has stopped the grain ? They can do this becasue of a loop hole where Russia subsidiaries in other countries can insure the ships via other companies. However, ship insurance works differently to other normal insurance, all the insurers insure everything. 1 massive oil tanker is cross insured by all the ship insurers because an oil spill cannot be covered by 1 insurer alone (think clean up and compensation costs). With the insurance structure required I don't think they are properly insured (Russia), maybe enough for 1 disaster at most. You cant just decide to insure ships as a business, its 400 / 500 year old business. It seems a bit dodgy. magnkarl
I am liking the fact that Russia has placed their navy in Novoryssisk rather than at Sevastopol, it means that Russia are actually afraid of Ukraine's firepower. I wonder how long it is until Ukraine blows up the Kerch bridge, but I presume it'll coincide with the push to reclaim Kherson. Rumours are swirling that Ukraine already has the 300km range ATACMS which will reach the bridge from Ukrainian controlled territory.

ender4
Is there still a chance that Ukraine will do a large counter-attack at some point soon, or is that no longer feasible?

The expected push back is approaching. Now that Ukraine has HIMARS etc they are currently focusing and succeeding to a high degree in degrading Russia’s supply lines. What they’ve done so far means that Russia is now storing ammunition much further away from the from and that requires at least twice as many trucks, guess what? They don’t have nearly enough. One the supply chains have been sufficiently degraded, the push back is to be expected. I’ve seen comments from Ukraines top general that he currently expects mid August to be a game changing period
CVByrne
It seems clear Russia wants the Luhansk, Donetsk and then Kherson and Zaoprizhziha Oblasts. So that's eastern and southern Ukraine east and south of the Dnipro river. If true at least this means no assault on Odesa.

Mandy Lifeboats
A Russian on Twitter told me that these shows are the equivalent of Jeremy Clarkson, Piers Morgan and Jim Davidson talking about how they would solve problems. The views expressed are ridiculous but get the ratings. I can appreciate that. Jeremy Clarkson did say on live TV that striking Civil Servants should be shot in front of their families. No-one took him seriously.

There’s a similar one for Northern Ireland floating around, and probably one for Salisbury if you search deep enough. As always, never misunderestimate people. I guess it’s a question of what proportion of Russian society belongs to what group.

From my sample size of two Russian programme developers from St Petersburg, sat on the table next to me this morning they are 'kin embarrassed by the state of affairs. I wasn't going to talk to them but my 4 year old struck up a conversation by going 'Dad, those guys are speaking funny'. So, in I went...
