I’m channel hopping on sky and have just realised that they’re still broadcasting RT on channel 511 - why on earth hasn’t this been taken down, it’s full of Russian propaganda unsurprisingly?!

There has been some talk about this along the lines that if Russia Today was banned here, then the BBC would be kicked out of Russia, and the BBC does much more good work over there than the unwatched RT does bad work over here.

Don't know realistically whether there is actually any connection though. I'd have though Putin would kick the BBC out if he wanted to regardless of the status of RT.

Genuinely now, whenever anything happens I come on here to get my information, whilst this may have originated as a football forum it’s grown to be so much more.

Sure, there are differences of opinion and I’ve been involved at the sharp end of that sometimes but I value this forum immensely and the opinions of the majority of the posters.

It also helps that there are a number of folks who are far better educated and informed on such a wide range of subjects than I.

No. You’re wrong. Smith Out!

So, what do we think?

1. There's a lot of made-up stuff on the internet and none of it is true. But it still made headlines and was bad for Russia

2. It's all true, and the Russians managed to fail to totally take out the border guards with sea and air strikes on a tiny little island, which makes the Russians look pretty incompetent.

3. The whole thing was a masterful piece of wartime theatre planned and staged by Ukraine somehow, knowing that it would be awful press for Russia.

Or something else?

Quote

On Friday we reported how Ukraine was honouring 13 soldiers it said were killed while defending Zmiinyi (Snake) island from Russian attacks.

But new information suggests the unit may still be alive, according to a Facebook post yesterday by Ukraine's State Border Guard Service.

"The SBGSU and the armed forces, like the whole of Ukraine, have received hope that all of Zmiinyi's defenders are alive," said the update.

I sat and watched it for an hour last night. They were showing a documentary that demonstrated very clearly why their invasion was not only justified, it was righteous and to the benefit of all mankind. Ukraine is a dump, nobody wants to live there especially not the 15 million people they kicked out who want to go back.

It was laughable really. I doubt even an eight year old would be taken in by it. Big chunks of it were contradictory, you could almost hear the “made up fact” klaxon go off every three minutes.

On the basis of what I saw last night, I say RT absolutely should be kept on. Everyone needs to see how laughable the pretext for this war is, the mental gymnastics they’ll do to support it, the lies they’ll tell to misrepresent it. It should be compulsory viewing. You’ll never complain about the BBC again.

I am so embarrassed and disgusted that this has been printed... Just makes us look even more like a bunch of colonial racist hypocrites.

If this current war turns another sector of society onto how disgusting the Telegraph is, well that might just be the one positive from all of this.

I doubt it will change anything though, Telegraph readers are perfectly comfortable in their angry superior skin.

This must have all been calculated.

It maybe be calculated but the sums have gone badly wrong.  He has fell into the trap of believing his own lies and thinking it's 1980 in terms of war readiness and execution.  He actually believes he can control a country that is (I think) 2nd largest in Europe.  How would that even work with numbers and supplies long term vs ongoing resistance.

I think he will be shocked at the resistance,  sanctions and all his friends turning their back.  There is no way back for Russia for a generation at least if they carry on with this.

I mean even if they install a puppet Government, the Ukrainian army and Ukrainian people are not going to stand for it.

They'll never control the army so there will be an ongoing guerilla war for years.

With the enormous size of Ukraine he's going to have to leave half his armed forces permanently stationed there if not more, all the while taking hit after hit after hit.

The West will continue supplying state of the art weapons to the guerrillas across those unfathomably large borders.

As the sanctions bite he's going to struggle to fund replacement military equipment and what they can make themselves will be low tech obsolete stuff, can they even manufacture things like the elusive microchip which powers pretty much anything computerised?

They'll need China to agree to smuggle stuff in to them that they probably won't be able to pay for.

Truss could be right that this could go on for years with Russia gradually becomming poorer and poorer.

Someone in Russia who can take action must be able to see this.  Most Dictators end up being deposed by The Military don't they.

The responses to this from residents of "impoverished and remote populations" are understandably not very polite.

Two intetesting things from the BBC interview of Liz Truss this morning:

Her open encouragement of UK nationals to join Ukraine’s rapidly forming foreign legion was very surprising, I don’t know if Gov’ ever actively endorsed people joining the International Brigades in Spain? Anyone know?

The frequent references to resistance, of the Ukrainian people, of resistance forces, long term resistance, etc. Government is now (imho) starting to socialise the idea that this could be a long term fight in which the UK is actively engaged, even when/if Russia wins the conventional aspect of the war.

I think that’s a shift in tone.

Isn't it illegal to join another country's armed forces?

No, French foreign legion being most obvious comparison, but loads of Brits serving in Australia, some in NZ and Canada.

Honestly, what really happens if Putin takes an L? How does he react?

That is the question with implications for NATO countries, particularly when we (collectively) are going out of way to supply him with one.
