The problem with revolutions is you never know who's going to seize power.  Unknown persons in charge of a country with massive stockpiles of nukes isn't a good thing.

Better the existing regime deal with him and hopefully a more pragmatic/moderate leader takes power and they can gradually change from within.

The bonkers thing is with all their massive natural resources, if they invested profits in the country and in the people it could be a vibrant wealthy country.  Instead a few people at the top have stolen it and become super rich elite.

True, to be honest I know very little about geopolitics so I really welcome some of the insight in here from a few posters.

But yes, greed again destroying what could be a prosperous society. Same old story.

I'm no expert mate, just my opinion.

Even if they manage to 'take' Ukraine, the resistance will be massive and they won't be able to hold it.

How can you hold a country of people who hate you, when they look and sound like you?

Yes, completely. This is why China has been determined to not be like Russia and allow Oligarchs to take control of state assets etc. We may not like a lot of what China does but the Communist Party there want to better the lives of people of their country. Its why they've taken down the property bubble there themselves and are targeting the rich.

It's a completely different society but China has never wanted to threaten the west, it wants to economically dominate if it can. That requires trade.

China has taken a completely different path in that it wants trade and it wants to be the dominant economic power in Asia.

Loftier ambition than that, I think?

You gotta love twitter for baseless nonsense. People fleeing Ukraine are refugees right now!! Not people planning nice visa applications with everything working as normal.

There are examples of UK Citizens, married to Ukranians who had to go back to Ukraine and apply for visas from there and now they can't

I thought my new Lada was running a bit late, it’s been 42 years now.

That’s your fault for asking for it in blue , could have had it in 41 if you’d have gone with black

French have escorted a Russian ship into harbour suspected of breaking sanctions (full of cars I think)

Seems the ships owner is on the sanctions list …

If true this could be significant. Russian military thinking isn’t great at improvisation because mental independence can get you shot. If the plan is failing badly then adjusting on the move won’t be easy, especially if the logistics isn’t in place to support an extended campaign - and what there is gets blown to bits with Javelins.

Yeah in a lot of aspects it's already won. If China wanted to f over America it could just call all the debt. Or the credit card debt

It would do more damage to China than America. China is a massive exporter, it is massively reliant on foreign trade. Even more so now it's bursting it's own property bubble.

You're taking this at face value, and when doing that, it seems outrageous, if it wasn't someone lying to take advantage of this crisis for political gain. It's true that the usual visa route isn't available. Because the Russians were sieging the city the visa centre was in. People weren't so kjeen to stick around and file paperwork when missiles started flying.

People can follow the usual asylum process (and there are a lot of problems with our asylum process), apply for visas from outside of Ukraine, and we've also automatically extended existing Ukrainian visas. It's not perfect, but Bella Sankey is either a liar or a moron. Or possibly both.
