I'd probably play Hourihane and Lansbury with no **** holding midfielder, but we all know that isn't going to happen... Unfortunately, that would be my choice as well. Or maybe even hourihane and Onomah as I think they're probably our most mobile

Sadly the more likely outcome is us playing with Jedi and Whelan as our CM pairing once Jedi comes back. Won't be many opening balls for Hogan to run onto created by those 2. Surely the need for a holding midfielder to effectively protect the defence, is now less valid with John Terry in the team. You're right though, we'll be using one.

It's the consistency of selection of the players picked to play around him and support his runs, that will enable an understanding to develop. The number 10 role given to Lansbury against Hull was yet another change to be factored in to a muddled revolving midfield. Bruce needs to decide on his best eleven and stick to it, apart from the occasional mid week rest for old legs. Only then will we see Hogan at his deadliest. Hogan is an asset when we are playing an attacking and pressing game, but is far less effective when we drop deep and isolate him. It's an obvious thing to say, but it happens far too much at the moment. I don't think we choose to drop deep.....we are losing the battle in midfield and we retreat. back on topic Scott needs a player to play off or a little partnership. Tro, after thirty/thirty five minutes you could clearly see Bruce yelling at Bacuna to stay back. He even repeated a double handed pushing motion to show him that he wanted him playing alongside Whelan. That was when we started to allow Hull to play into space and gain confidence. It also began to isolate Hogan.

And I would add, that IMO, Fowler would've failed under our system, Owen would've failed, Rush would've failed etc etc. Our side is geared to defend. It doesn't mean we always defend, but we are geared to it. It simply will never suit Hogan. Scott Hogan looked isolated second half , but I thought we took the initiative to Hull initially and attacked with vigour.....its only when we are losing the physical battle and its obvious to all, that we funnel back.....To me Terry that is a natural tendency of a team that is losing its individual battles.... its poor pitch craft. I honestly thought we had bought midfielders to fix this. Edited August 8, 2017 by TRO

The good ones though are ball players who can start off an attack or link effectively with the more forward midfielders. They ain't cheap!

Well if we HAVE to play 4 at the back. why not a 4-1-4-1, play Whelan/Jedi as the 1 in front of the back 4 with 2 creative players in front. Villarocker
I'd rather see O'Hare played at centre forward because he's a lot more mobile.

Dr_Pangloss
Looks garbage to me. His touch is dreadful and he frankly doesn't do anything, he doesn't close down enough and rarely seems to be in space. Lost patience, he just has to do more.
