To be fair to Luiz I don't think he's meant to be a defensive minded player, he plays deep for Brazil U21s, but he's more of a deep lying playmaker of sorts, as I've said last season at Girona he wasn't even playing as a DM for them. When he's ready, he'll get a chance. Where that leaves Luiz, I don't know.
Nigel Posted September 9, 2019 VT Supporter Share Posted September 9, 2019 Apparently he is going to start at left back for Ireland. Very interesting!

KentVillan
Miccus McCarthius, the last living relic of the Jurassic period. Palaeontologists believe his small reptile brain shows the very early signs of what later evolved into tactical acumen.
ciggiesnbeer
I am gonna withhold judgement. I am no MM fan but he is right this is a free experiment for all of us. If it works out then Conor is more valuable to us (and he is already valuable) as he can now cover another position. I doubt it will work of course, but MM is experimenting for us and Conor seems happy so lets give it a go.
KentVillan
Definitely happy for Mick to have a crack. There is a school of thought that all open play positions are "out of position" for Conor, and he is always just being shoe horned in as a dead ball specialist. Conor is a goal threat in open play, though, and that usually comes from the edge of the D. He's also pretty good at knocking the ball about from the centre circle, and making late runs into the box. Will playing full back let him showcase any of that? Probably not. I also think the positional responsibilities at full back are trickier than most people assume. Offside traps, set piece defending, back post covering, defending 2 on 1s, counter attacks off corners, etc. - I doubt Conor is particularly comfortable with any of this. Anyway, good luck to him. If he can force Neil Taylor out of the squad, then this could be a major turning point in our season.
rodders0223
Makes sense to me, I have said if we could squeeze him in somewhere out wide it would be ideal for the set pieces. You just don't want to be playing a midfielder who cannot pass forward. Even big Mick knows that.
Popular Post wilko154
If this works out Steve Bruce is going to have sleepless nights thinking about how he didn't think of this first.
useless
He won't be playing left-back for us, Targett, Taylor and Hause will all be ahead of him for that position, probably even Guilbert as well if it came to it. Haven't got the stats to back it up, but for all the criticism that Hourihane gets, it seems that we win more often when he's in the side.

Zatman
Ian Harte made a career at left back by being unable to defend but had a great left peg. Could be done and its what friendlies are for Edited September 10, 2019 by Zatman
Zatman
Luckily for Hourihane that that elite Bulgarian winger Tonev is not in the squad

I think it had a lot to do with the idea that milner had a lot of qualities that klopp deemed important to have on the pitch, as much as the lack of an outstanding alternative.

Unreal engine, good footballing brain, solid defensively, and loads of experience playing as a winger. McGinn would be a good full back for similar reasons. I don't see it so much with Hourihane, but worth a try I guess.
Keyblade
Hourihane might end up being in the Douglas/Doherty mould but if we thought Taylor and Elmo were slow and ponderous at FB, Conor would be next level.
