...the North Stand (seriously can we just start saying Ron Saunders now?)...

I have thoughts of the one VillaTalker who objected to the stadium expansion, voting for...

THE ERIC BLACK STAND

🤦‍♂️

Its a shame the gold lions gone as that would be much more eye catching on the building than the claret one would be

Hmmm...I think that's a price worth paying to rid us of our current badge displaying our colours club as yellow and light blue and our name as AVFC.

Fits in with an October start.

I think they'll start doing stuff for the project before then - perhaps removing the academy building and office/shop buildings first - when they actually start work on the stand itself will be interesting - I guess it's possible that they start the stand last and leave it open for next season before demolition in 2024 - I'd have thought it will be earlier, but it's hard to really get a feel for it. If they start next spring and spend two years doing the whole thing, then we'll be open for the start of the 2025/26 season.

I taks it the badge on the villa fanzone will be re designed with the new badge now?

I wonder if they'll do anything with the fancy mosaic on the holte end? That definitely will be outdated (it already is to a degree anyway)

Also, the awful illuminated signs on the Doug Ellis that appear to be an indistinct splodge of yellow and blue when viewed from the motorway will hopefully be improved too.

The 'start' date is rather ambiguous for a project of this size. It could be argued that it started with the first drawings in readiness for consultation.

As you mentioned, there will be lots of minor stages they can be started before what I think most of us fans will see as the true start - the closure, for match day purposes, of the existing North Stand.

Does anyone else remember Purslow saying October next year, or am I simply incorrect on that?

I don't recall, he might well have done - there are reports in the some of the press saying Spring 2023, but as you say, that might depend on the definition of the start of work. I think the first big visible sign will be the demolition of the two buildings behind the stand.

Have we appointed a construction company?

New stands obviously have a lot more complexity than previous one. The knocked down the Holte in the summer and had at least part of the lower tier open by the winter. I guess what takes a lot of the time is fitting out all of the corporate. I didn't realise that they will be losing all of the hospitality in the trinity for a season, that is quite  a big hit.

They'll just move it all into the North for the season and because of the amount of hospitality in the new North Stand, they'll have more availability than they do now even before the refit of the Trinity.

The ground levelling will be quite complex I think - I'm not quite sure where pitch height is in relation to the current North Stand - there's a big step up to the back of the North Stand from the car park that they'll be levelling off, and I'm guessing the base of the new stand will start fifteen feet lower than the existing one from the outside of the stadium - but judging where pitch height is on the back of the North Stand is something I'm struggling to get my tiny bonce around.

Ah I see. So the new stand will be built first, and then trinity is refurbished? That makes more sense.

As soon as the North Stand (seriously can we just start saying Ron Saunders now?) opens, all of the hospitality areas in the Trinity Road Stand will be closed for a full season - and in one of those quirks that demonstrates just how big the new stand will be, at that point, even with the Trinity Hospitality completely closed off, Villa Park will have more Hospitality seats available than it's ever had before.

Wow. That really is impressive and brings into focus how much of a game changer this is from an income generation point of view.

But can you get a bovril in a flimsy plastic cup and run the risk of third degree burns? Probably not, the game’s gone.

Not to my knowledge. I expect now full planning consent has been given, a few companies who specialise in stadium construction, will be tendering accurately against the specifications granted.

I tend to prefer stands that are not named after an individual so renaming the new north stand after Ron Saunders wouldn’t be my first choice.

If it had to be, I’d rather it was William McGregor as his legacy is inherently more unique than a manager who won the league.

I wouldn't be too upset if it were the Ron Saunders Stand but you certainly make a fair point regarding William McGregor.

I'm asking myself, does the fact that R.S. happened to win the most recent of our league titles, qualify him above other league winning managers and a European Cup final stages winning manager?

I might have mentioned it before but renaming the individual blocks within the stand might be a good idea. So instead of block T1,T2 etc I’d go with the Ron Saunders enclosure/ section, Ugo Ehiogu section , Billy Walker etc… that way more of our legends will get the recognition they deserve with the new modern stand.

Ron Saunders would be a popular choice and I get it. But as you point out, there’s Tony Barton to consider.

And does Saunders get to have his name on the stand more than George Ramsay because George’s  league and cup wins happened in the old black and white days which no one can remember so therefore they’re basically irrelevant? Seems somewhat arbitrary to me.

This weighing up of achievements of individuals in order to decide on naming things is a headache and why it should be avoided in my opinion. At least the legacy of McGregor is unique and can’t really be compared to anyone else, so it’s not like there’s another figure who it could be said did more.

Is Ugo really a Villa legend? Didn't he also go the Middlesborough way? Who next; the Gareth Southgate section??

Yeah I agree, William Mcgregor is a Villa legend and hence a stadium section would be better aligned with him.

We probably need to move on from Ugo now, yes a good player and it was awfully sad.
