Hobsons Choice Posted February 21, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted February 21, 2023 In fairness the current food shortage hints as much to the terrifying future effects of climate change as to the terrifying future effects of Brexit. Which is more terrifying? There's only one way to find out.........fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!
sidcow Posted February 22, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted February 22, 2023 I'm thinking that maybe the weather has caused the shortage but because of Brexit more produce is staying in The EU than coming here. This would explain why European supermarkets are not being hit so bad. If there is a shortage sell it locally rather than incur the shipping costs and additional admin cost to sell it in the UK.
sidcow Posted February 22, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted February 22, 2023 I'm going out to buy a shed load of Toilet Roll. We all know where this is heading.

This is classic Brexit, the EU are not immune to the problems that naturally occur but are setup to manage them far better as a collective. For the UK it’s a major issue, for the EU it’s a blip.
StefanAVFC Posted February 22, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted February 22, 2023 No issues with supermarket produce availability over here. Was just in Italy, and no issues there too.
Rolta
No issues in Spain either. I have some lovely tomatoes. I was able to choose from abundant options.
Seat68
#tomatowatch Word from Stafford is that tomatoes in a number of varieties are available. This was at just after 7 this morning, there may have been a run on them since.
Genie
Not sure if it’s just the media trying to make a mountain out of a molehill but on the radio this morning they were saying supermarkets will limit sales of certain vegetables. Probably bs.
Seat68
Toamtoes are seen as a moneymaker so it pays for Big Supermarket to have them in stock.

Probably bs. Confirmed at Morrisons and Asda. Tesco around here has basically had an empty veg aisle by lunchtime the past couple of times I've been there. No problem with spuds and carrots but empty of pretty much everything else, haven't seen a tomato, pepper or cucumber in a couple of weeks. Most of this stuff will have either been grown under lights or flown in from afar. The whole idea of eating local and seasonal has long disappeared.

chrisp65
I think this is a marketing ploy by the shadowy figures behind big cucumber.
