Genie
Possibly in the thread already, but read earlier than more than 1.1m people in America have been killed by guns since John Lennon was shot dead. That's mind blowing. ...and to think they still don't have enough guns.

YLN
Five minutes 28 seconds of hate. Worrying She was right eighteen months ago. If we'd listened to her, we could have been doing airstrikes since then and we'd be finished with ISIS by now. Instead we dilly dallied and now they're much stronger. Maybe we should listen to her now. Or maybe we just spent the last eighteen months looking for (or helping create) a good reason to bomb them. And now we'll spend the next eighteen months looking for reasons to further militarize the police. Edited December 8, 2015 by YLN

It does seem very likely. In the very long run, demographic change suggests gun ownership will decline. Fewer households than ever possess guns, it's just that those households possess more of them. Gun owners are hugely disproportionately white, and as minorities become an overall majority, their general disinterest in firearms will cause the industry to atrophy. A smaller number of gun-owning households will reach financial saturation point - guns are expensive - and the industry will have over-extended itself. But I doubt gun ownership will become illegal in my lifetime, and of course many thousands of innocent people will die before we even start to really see the trend I described above emerging.
Rodders
Anyone seen the video of Terence Cratcher - a black pastor who had his arms up, in a thoroughly unthreatening way and was just essentially murdered by the police. Hard to view it as anything but. Absolutely despicable. news article : http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/20/us/video-released-in-terence-crutchers-killing-by-tulsa-police.htm Quote During the encounter, which took place around 7:40 p.m. Friday, Terence Crutcher, 40, was shot once and killed by Betty Shelby, a Tulsa police officer since 2011, after the police received reports of an abandoned vehicle blocking a road, the department said. Video recorded by a police helicopter and a patrol car’s dashboard camera shows Mr. Crutcher raising his hands, walking toward a car and leaning against it. He was then Tasered by one officer, Tyler Turnbough, and fatally shot by Officer Shelby, the department said, though the view from both cameras is obstructed in the moments before those actions. Tulsa’s police chief, Chuck Jordan, said at a news conference Monday that Mr. Crutcher was unarmed and did not have a weapon in his vehicle. Shane Tuell, a police spokesman, said Officer Shelby gave a statement to homicide detectives on Monday morning. She is on paid administrative leave, the department said.... ... In an interview, Officer Shelby’s lawyer, Scott Wood, said the officer had thought that Mr. Crutcher had a weapon. Mr. Wood said Mr. Crutcher had acted erratically, refused to comply with several orders, tried to put his hand in his pocket and reached inside his car window before he was shot. Chief Jordan said Officer Shelby had encountered Mr. Crutcher and his vehicle while en route to another call and requested backup because she was “not having cooperation” from him. Officer Turnbough and his partner responded to Officer Shelby’s request for backup. It was the dashboard camera in their patrol car that recorded the shooting. According to that video, when the second police car arrived, Mr. Crutcher had his hands raised and was walking away from Officer Shelby, who walked behind him with her gun pointed at his back. She was soon joined by three more officers. Mr. Crutcher was shot less than 30 seconds after the second car arrived... Always with the "thought he had a gun line..." Davkaus
US police certainly seem to have an above average rate of murderers and thieves (sorry, civil forfeiture isn't theft, somehow, I forgot), not much of a surprise. As much as our police sometimes get things wrong, it makes you appreciate our police a lot more when you see what goes on over there. It's basically just the biggest gang in the country. Maybe its just me but I don't see the logic of having a concealed carry license or even an open carry license if that gives the police carte blanche to shoot you dead. If you believe as a law enforcement that you can't handle the risk of someone going for a gun then don't allow it in the first place! It doesn't help when something as basic as a traffic stop can result in the officer believing that the "perp" can go for a gun and shoot them dead at any moment. It adds tension and unease to even the most basic of interactions between a civilian and the police. Its basically a big mess that seems unsolvable, nothing to see here, move along etc...

Keyblade
It's crazy that they managed to apprehend a terrorist alive who detonated a bomb in 3 different places and injured 30 people, AFTER a shootout with him but an unarmed black man with his hands up, following instructions gets shot dead AFTER being tased. It is absolutely bonkers out there. If you watch the footage, one of the officers in the chopper observing the situation remarked "that looks a bad dude" with literally nothing to go by other than his skin colour. I'm not sure which shooting is worse, this one or the one where the man was shot 4 times in his car in front of his infant child for simply reaching for his ID.
chrisp65
It’s not something that is solvable in the short to medium term for the parts of the U.S. where this is happening. If there is a good chance people have guns, a good chance people are drugged up and a basic human instinct to protect yourself, it’s going to happen. Police get shot. Are you going to be the cop that goes through life giving everyone the benefit of the doubt and a free first shot? Perhaps that’s what happened the other day with shoot out with Ahmed Khan Rahami. Long term, change the constitution, strangle off the supply of guns. You’ll never get rid of them all, you won’t stop some people making their own. But you will eventually in 50 years time get to a point where ammunition and working weapons are carried by significantly less criminals and nutters. At that point the police can give a little more leeway. But that’s not going to happen. So all you can do is shrug when it happens, and hope there are enough people with mobile phones and sufficient sanctions that the police ‘police’ themselves for fear of prosecution. Meanwhile, Kent and Essex police here have notified us that they will now be routinely patrolling the streets armed. This, in response to an unparalleled level of threat. Well that doesn’t help does it. If it’s a genuine deterrent it pushes the nutjob suicide jihadist on to the next town. That way, we eventually need armed police patrolling Devon beaches, provincial leisure centres, non-league football games. Surely we don’t want that. It’s not like armed police is a proven working terror deterrent in Belgium, France, New York…. It’s just an excuse for some billy big balls police chief to get more kit. Armed police for Bluewater Shopping Centre Quote Police armed with guns are to patrol routinely in Kent,..... The move follows recent terrorist attacks in Europe......
