chrisp65
If it had ever been a serious attempt at levelling up they’d have started in Leeds and Manchester. It was about getting people to London, and it was botched. That’s the controversy.
Genie
I wouldn’t be surprised if they cancelled the Manchester leg in a way that costs more money than if they’d have completed it.

tinker Posted October 2, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted October 2, 2023 The writing was on the wall for HS2 when the Eastern leg was cancelled, Leeds, Sheffield and Newcastle struck off the map in one swoop. Now it's Manchester and Liverpools turn. As it stands it will benefit Birmingham Airport giving another airport feeding London tourism. The idea of HS2 was sound, the implementation of it is a disaster, around the NEC and East Birmingham, thousands of trees have been uprooted, ancient trees destroyed for no apparent reason, it's a 200m wide strip of destruction running up half the country for a train line that's no more than 40m wide. We're importing the skills as well because we haven't got them in this country.

It gets talked down because it’s ludicrously over budget and every time they check where they are against the budget it’s gone up a few more billion Every news outlet has been publishing the chaos of the project from the start. You're last words sum it up. From the start, before any budget overruns they've been rubbishing it. This is the point. At no part in its history since inception will you read anything positive press about it. Except probably The Guardian. In fact even now The Guardian are saying cancellation would be disastrous and saying that cancellation could have knock-on effects for Britain for decades. The only reason it's massively over budget is because of Tory incompetence and their constant procrastination. The constant review after review, freezing of work. It could and should have been built and finished by now at a fraction of the cost. It's no coincidence that generally socialist countries build a lot of public transport and the further right you go the less and less you get. The USA where the left wing party are more right wing than our right wing party won't invest a bean in public transport or indeed and public infrastructure if they can help it. If you don't think the predominantly right wing press in this country have been poisoning this project you need to open your eyes more.

sidcow Posted October 2, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted October 2, 2023 Apparently The Times are saying that they will still build the final stretch Euston. I wonder how many years will pass before HS3 is announced to build the rest. My guess is if Labour win a second term.

Genie
Quote Sunak asked about handling of HS2 More from Sunak who is asked about the handling of the announcement and the general conversation around the HS2 project during the Tory party conference. The PM says he doesn't think it has been handled poorly. "I really think it has gone well," he tells BBC Breakfast. link Sunak has turned to comedy
OutByEaster? Posted October 3, 2023 Moderator Share Posted October 3, 2023 Seems like they're trying to leave HS2 as the biggest mess possible in the hope that it'll hinder Mr Starmer.

chrisp65
They really are going after the nutter vote, relentlessly. This week they’ve insisted multiple times there is an absolute blanket ban on going faster than 20mph in Wales. They’ve insisted multiple times that Labour are planning a meat tax, and now they’re saying Local Authorities will limit the number of times you can go to the shops. It really will be the bottom of the barrel voting for these people. Nobody else, just the dregs. Those that think there’s still another pound to be stolen, those that think vaccines cause homosexuality in frogs. That’s the tory demographic now, the greedy and the mad.
Chindie Posted October 3, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted October 3, 2023 The rumour (which may have been confirmed now, **** knows) is that they will use the money allocated to the HS2 post Birmingham leg to fund a tax cut, most likely on fuel. Which is very Tory. And won't work.
