Wonder if their readers will ever care enough to stop reading. Indeed. Although to be fair The Times Radio youtube channel is pretty good. "But Brexit knocked 4% off GDP and is the biggest single impediment to growth." "Not that sort of growth." Not that growth is even the answer. You can't grow forever on a finite planet. It is the elephant in the room that the Brexit elephant is standing on. So true. Its Brexit. Its why I am now a single issue voter. I vote for whoever will get us back into the EU. Thats it. You invent a combine harvester so harvesting wheat takes 1 man instead of 100. Then 99 people are free to do other things to improve society, and food gets cheaper for everyone, etc. Simplified example but “growth = bad” is equally simplistic. Making work more productive is always a worthwhile goal imo. She should have said that it's also down to the people - she needs more quality from her big hitters, some moments of magic.

In all seriousness her economic plan was basically that unfunded tax cuts would unleash those moments of magic within all of us (generally not how you achieve productivity growth). There was a funny article on the BBC today about Kwarteng saying how his recent time as energy secretary had opened his eyes to the value of state intervention, and turned him away from the path of being a hardcore free-marketeer. Christ knows what would have happened if we’d got the full-fat version of his economic plan.

The emboldened bit could apply to loads of things that would help growth but are just unpalatable to Tory vermin. Legalisation and taxation of cannabis would bring in billions in revenue and create a whole new industry. Allowing asylum seekers to work while claims were processed would save money in handouts and fill labour shortages in crucial industries, as well as being a humane and decent thing to do. Weirdly I've not heard them suggested in Tory circles as helpful measures. Onshore wind. Investing directly in insulation, solar and heat pump installation and manufacturing. Investing in wind turbine manufacturing. There are entire industries you could build full of highly paid high tax paying jobs. But no, we'll ban onshore wind, ban tidal projects and allow fracking and invest billions hugely expensive nuclear built and run by foreign governments. mjmooney Posted October 15, 2022 VT Supporter Share Posted October 15, 2022 Most of the Tory papers have turned (even the Heil is looking sceptical), but the Excess is still desperately clinging to the 'Saint Maggie reborn' fantasy.
