History has constantly shown that to be untrue. Most things worth a damn in this country ie NHS, Welfare State, Decent state funded education for all, the right to representation in the workplace, decent health and safety standards, all have been either outright opposed or had obstacles put in their path by the Tories. What advancements ordinary people have enjoyed in their lives, have come through considerable struggle and hard fighting. Credit for that goes primarily to the Left. Liberals and Labour.

History has also shown that Conservatives oppose this kind of progressive thinking until it becomes overwhelmingly obvious that they're wrong.

It's always "this is going too far" things are "too extreme". They oppose oppose oppose until finally it's so obvious that they're wrong that they fall in line. Climate change would be a good example of that right now. Suddenly they're falling into line and concentrating on the environment, despite decades of opposing that sort of thing

In fairness, I think that tussle between conservative critics and progressive reformers is what helps to drive democracies forwards. The country suffers when we have too prolonged a period of conservatism or weak opposition, but it's not an entirely bad thing to have people picking holes in progressive ideas and progressive reforms.

The issue is when stuff is just smeared as "unworkable" or "socialist" or "fantasy economics" or whatever, and you can literally see it already working in another country.

Not sure if this belongs here or in the Russia thread, but Chris Bryant on fire today. Liz Truss's pants on fire.

Siri, show me the most mealy-mouthed, through gritted teeth apology you can find…

Ukrainian refugees in Calais that want to enter the UK now have access to a pop up Visa centre. In Lille. 75 miles away. All heart these Tory scum.

Well it's an improvement, at the start of the week it was Paris or Brussels

The Tories said everyone in Calais had access to one though, but forgot to mention it's a 150 mile round trip. Just feels like another hurdle put in the way on purpose.

No, I agree. The Tories were lying. At the start of the week, there were only two places, they were as I said, Brussels and Paris

They were supposedly opening a facility 15 miles inside the Polish Border but unlike all the other countries they haven't quite managed that yet

I don't understand why I expected anything different. There's no money in it for them or their mates, so they were never going to roll out the welcome mats.

I was glad to see Roger Gale, who surprisingly is a Tory, call Priti Patel out for lying about this.

What is even more surprising about that is that Gale is the MP for North Throbber Central

Not sure if you'd seen this. Gale accusing Patel of Misleading the Commons (AKA lying). Not often you see that from a Tory MP

I did see this, but thank-you for sharing. I also saw that he claimed it would be a resignation matter under a normal administration. Good to see a Tory being in tune with the public for once.

It's only a week ago that he said that every Russian passport holder should be deported from the UK.

So I'd be wary of making him the "in tune with the nation" guy.

That's very true, the only thing you can trust about the Tories is that they're going to Tory.

Well, just like was said with the Syrian refugees, if there country is so shit, shouldn’t they stay there and fight to sort it out?

Proud we’re encouraging them to stand on their own two feet.

Just to sit alongside that...

Quote

Charity workers who are trying to send aid to people in war-torn Ukraine say their donations are spending days stuck at the Port of Dover due to complex post-Brexit checks.

Agnieszka Lokaj, who runs the Lewisham Polish Centre in south London, said on Monday her organisation had up to five tonnes of donations sat in London that is struggling to cross the UK border with the European Union due to confusion over paperwork.

Three lorries carrying donations collected by the Lewisham Polish Centre were stuck at Dover for two days last week, with drivers initially sent away by border officials. Lokaj said the confusion related to the fact that the exports were donations and not for re-sale, with officials asking for additional paperwork despite being told they are for humanitarian purposes, not commercial.
