Ah the trickle down that's worked so well.

Cool, more Tory style policy and austerity then.  Which has also worked so well.

You can moan about as much as you want and call it what you like.

But it's a fact if you increase tax on the super rich they just walk.. Because they can.

France tried it and ended up with less tax because the rich just moved elsewhere.

I'm not saying it's right and I'm not saying it's fair.

But declaring "just tax the richest 1% an extra 1%, job done" is just not an answer.

It's like trying to bottle Scotch Most. It's a soundbyte.

Where to? How much is the tax there? And why aren't they there now?

Governments empowering them and pandering to them is a major factor in why the country is in the state it's in.  These are the people that doubled their wealth since the pandemic whilst everyone has suffered,

I don't know. All sorts of places. A lot of places will welcome their 0.5% of billions.

Gerard Depardieu went to Belgium and then to Russia.

If they're here they're obviously happy with what they're paying but change that and they will walk.

Obviously not all, but enough to make it futile.

Stealth tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax are likely the way they will go.

I love the way it's described as stealth tax. Like no one knows about Capital Gains and Inheritance Tax until WHAM a bill lands on your doorstep.

AKA tax that isn't Icome Tax or National Insurance.

In my world I've been waiting for Insurance Premium Tax to increase for year's which creates a right pain in the arse.  I see no way of avoiding this now.

Yes I know. But taxing them more is like trying to grasp a slippery rope.

As I say I'm not saying it's right, I'm just realistic about how they'll react. It's no silver bullet.

How about taxing gambling (sports bets, slots, casino, bingo, lottery) winnings?

That would raise some serious cash wouldn’t it? Plus the people paying it are up anyway, so it’s not that painful.

another idea, follow Canada and tax Chinese EV’s at 100% duty.

Gambling used to be taxed. But here’s the thing, it’s the poor that gamble.

OK, right. Maybe this is an unfair, incomplete take, but if the Guardian is basically calling its own darlings out as "depressing," it does seem ... worrying? I'm sure there are all kinds of good reasons for tax hikes, but try selling that door to door when you're canvassing for votes. I think the Labour should be a little more global-aware. Really don't need "unpopular Labour Party tax" as a global news story this fall, not at this moment in geopolitics. Doesn't help Dems in the USA, as it reinforces the image of the centre left as tax happy. It's the timing that concerns me, not the rationale. Seems super out of touch, too -- coldly technocratic is the phrase that comes to mind.

Keir Starmer takes a political gamble with message of bad news

Larry Elliott Economics editor

Past Labour PMs – Blair, Wilson, Attlee – have tended to arrive in power accentuating the positive

Sir Keir Starmer could perhaps have timed it better. On the day that Oasis, the band that symbolised the mood of sunny optimism that swept Tony Blair to power in 1997, announced their reunion, the prime minister’s message to the nation was that things would get worse before they got better.

Politically, it is quite a gamble. There haven’t been all that many Labour governments in the past 125 years, but they have tended to arrive in power accentuating the positive. That was true of Blair in 1997 and true of Harold Wilson in 1964.

It was certainly true of Clement Attlee in 1945, who insisted – despite the country being skint at the end of the second world war – that there would be no going back to the Great Depression of the 1930s. Britain was facing what John Maynard Keynes described as a “financial Dunkirk” but the Attlee government still managed to create the postwar welfare state and the NHS.

Winnings! The majority of people loose. Tax the betting companies more.

They’ll be paying tax on the profits already (in theory).

We've got a PM having to check prison spaces during major rioting throughout the country. The Tories broke pretty much everything. I seriously don't get the attitude from some when we have a PM who is being honest with the situation and saying they need time to make things better.

Would you prefer a stop the boats style slogan that makes you feel ok and you can stick your head in the sand regarding the actual day to day issues we face?

I'm no die hard labour supporter and Starmer isn't some sort of political hero to me, but come on. Let's think about where we've been and where we aim to get to.

I see he’s still going with the surprise £20 billion black hole schtick which was debunked before the election, but let’s not worry about that.

Personally I just don’t want a continuation of the kind of policy that has caused this mess in the first place.
