Yeah i was critical on cameron too at the time.

So was you happy with camerons response at the time too then?

I just think this was always going to happen. Its been building up for a while and these far right nut jobs were looking for any excuse to kick off

Yes, I was happy with how quickly and decisively the 2011 riots were quashed.

Please don’t call them protests. They’re racist riots.

Labour have acted super quickly on this. I really don’t see how they could have acted much quicker. COBRA meetings aren’t just something you can do in an hour.

But you won’t be convinced

Spoken like a true labour supporter. If that was tories you would be criticising them as most labour supporters here. ill leave it there.

As you wont be convinced either.

He is going to have to come back at some point though or go somewhere else. They won't keep him there thats for sure.

Why not? Cyprus is pretty much quasi owned by Russia. They'll keep him as long as they find him useful.

Why? It's chock full of Russians who they don't kick out and he's an EU citizen so can't

Because the russians give money to cyprus, they and tourism is what makes cyprus make money. Without that we would be ****. Go and look how many developments they are buying up.

Robinson wont do any of that - he will told to leave im sure of that. Its quite a left wing country

How can they tell him to leave? He’s an EU citizen in an EU country who can legally stay as long as he likes.

In the 2011 riots Mark Duggan was killed 4th August. First riot occurred 6th August. Riots spread on 7th and 8th August. Cameron called a Cobra meeting on 9th August.

Labour's timeline is almost exactly the same as Cameron.

You can't just arrange these things at the drop of a hat. Especially as you wouldn't even do so until something highly serious has actually happened.

He spoke to the senior police officers on Friday and authorised additional resources and special procedures.

I really don't see how he could have acted quicker.

Amusingly given the tories laying into Starmer despite him not going on holiday, Cameron stayed on holiday for a couple of days when the rioting broke out in 2011 :)

If the Tories had done it I’d be pleasantly surprised. Given people like Johnson didn’t even bother attending COBRA meetings when the country was facing its worst crisis in decades, it would have been a remarkable turnaround.

It would have been far more likely that prominent Tory members would have been stoking the fires themselves rather than coming down hard on the rioters, given it’s probably largely their voters participating.

It’s actually quite embarrassing to try and bring a Tory comparison into a discussion about COBRA meetings 😂

PS I’m not a Labour supporter

The threat of the strongest possible punishments by the home secretary, it should do. What do you suggest they should have done instead?

It is amazing how quick the Tories have been to jump on Labour (who have been in power for 4 weeks) for something that the Tories spent 14 years creating the environment for.

Next thing we'll have people rocking up to A&E and not being seen within an hour and calling for Starmers head.

Suella was critical of Labour for not reversing the 2 child benefit cap which she voted to implement

Thought Labour were going to cut waiting times ?   Also Bangor> Barry .

Yes, I thought they would in six weeks too, and during the summer with unresolved union disputes.

(I'm  not saying they will necessarily,  just that it may perhaps be a little too early to tell).

Just noticed that the 2 posts above are the first in this thread for 13 days. It’s nice to not have to discuss daily scandal/arrest/general throbbery in a politics thread.

I guess like football referees you don’t notice the competent ones.

It's a bit strange because there have been a few uncomfortable moments with them, but as you say even their wobbles are barely noticeable/insignificant compared to crazy Tory stuff.

I'm looking forward to Parliament reconvening in September to see what they get on with in the early days.

Yeah.  They're doing exactly what it said on the tin.

Tory-lite politics without the corruption and incompetence and scandals.

It is what it is I guess.  Better than went before it.

But no groundbreaking stuff, and very little socialism.

The 'establishment' will be happy with things.
