HanoiVillan
Quietly, since the referendum Labour has gained around 130,000 new members. This is actually nearly as many people as the Tory party's entire membership.

Hmmm makes you wonder if they are the same people, might explain Corbyn's selection.
Popular Post villaglint
I just joined the Labour Party. Always voted for Libs in past as they were the only party anywhere close to the Tories where I live (Bournemouth) but seeing as they've disappeared I guess they won't be an option next time round. I think we need an opposition more than ever. I fear a lurch to the right with the new uncertainty in politics and Theresa May does nothing to calm that fear. With regards to Corbyn I'd agree he hasn't been a great leader, he hasn't taken the party with him and I disagree with him on several issues like Trident etc. However he is the only politician talking about inequality which for me is the central issue of our age and actually sits behind a lot of the turmoil we are currently seeing. I think he has an honesty and integrity that is missing from most in the Houses of Parliament. I'm very unsure whether he can convince the swing voters/South and I agree with Blandy that having a party capable of winning is actually the most important thing. If the PLP put up someone credible (or not Angela Eagles) against him I'd be willing to listen to that person and form a judgement. The point is though that Corbyn has got me listening at least. I am a swing voter in that I've never voted for Labour before, they have over 500k members now so it's not all Tories Trent who only have 150k. I recognise that is not representative of the wider voting public but maybe just maybe there is an appetite to give the Goverment a kicking after the negotiations and all the mess that will come in the next few years. If there is a lurch one way or the other ill be voting for the left whether that be Corbyn or someone else.
HanoiVillan
. . . . and at long last Angela Eagle launches her leadership bid. My prediction that Labour won't reach Christmas in its current form just looks better and better with every passing day.
darrenm
Good. Let the Tory wannabes form their own party and let's see how well they do.
HanoiVillan
Looks like Corbyn will be deposed without members getting a say at all. Graun: 'It is understood that Labour’s national executive committee will convene a special meeting on Tuesday to rule on whether Corbyn, who has very limited support in parliament, needs to have the support of 51 MPs to get on the ballot paper alongside Eagle and any other contenders. The Labour party has taken legal advice, which indicates that he will need to find the nominees, in line with the precedent set in 1988 when Neil Kinnock was challenged by Tony Benn. Also set to be discussed is the timing of a cut-off after which newly signed members will not be eligible to vote on the leadership and the arrangements for the “registered supporters” deal under which any member of the public could pay £3 to have a vote.' http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jul/09/labour-turmoil-angela-eagle-jeremy-corbyn Seems they won't be taking any risk of him winning again. dAVe80
If Corbyn isn't on the ballot, that's the Labour Party as we know it done, in my opinion. If that happens, the party splits.

villa4europe
this angela eagle...listening to her talk, shes just not a leader, shes seemingly got little charisma, seen on her a couple of things now and whilst id admit i know very little about her what i have heard i really dont like, she seems like another Ed
Rodders
If Labour dont have corbyn the ballot, they can to go hell for forever and a day. The stubborn blindness to understanding the need for fundamental change in british society which has not been so unequal (from a wage distribution perspective ) since the turn of the 20th century will kill them. The rumoured talk with other tories for another party just confirms the reality that many of them are careerist dickheads only interested in playing a politics by numbers for their own gain and ignoring the economic fate of people they ought to represent. **** 'em.
Demitri_C
I honestly cannot believe the labour party have imploded as badly as they have been. i actually think corbyn would do better than red ed did in an election.
HanoiVillan
Some discussion on the vague possibility that Angela Eagle may be deselected by Wallasey CLP, although personally I don't think it'll happen. hippo
Labour are going to loose the next election anyway. Electing a new leader is probably more about keeping the party as a centre left parliamentary party and mainting where it has been for around 25 years. A split looks inevitable the question is which is the least bad split:- The parliamentary labour party MP'S leave and form a new center left party (should Corbyn be on the ballot paper and win) Or the Hard left and support of Unite are marginalised and withdraw funding from the labour party (should Corbyn be prevented from being on the ballot paper and eagle or an other win) Personally I think option 2 is the better option from a labour point of view. Or if Corbyn is left of the ballot paper and Owen Smith wins a leadership election - he may be able to get the unions back on board. IMO if Corbyn wins a re run - the labour party as a credible opposition will fall into the hands of the socialist worker party - and cease to be the major opposition. But if Labour were to implode now is a good time - with whats going to take place over the next few years - Corbyn v Eagle will be pretty small soon forgotten news..
