That's unfair, people hate both the Tory party and the current Labour party - both arms of the corporate party have reached a point where I think the public are sick to death of them - that's what Corbyn is feeding off - it's what got Syriza elected in Greece and what's pushed Podemos to the forefront in Spain. There is a global resistance to Neo-Liberalism. Whether Corbyn can beat a media that would rally around the Tory candidate is a tough one.
OutByEaster? Posted August 13, 2015 Moderator Share Posted August 13, 2015 it's interesting to note that the media keep telling us that us that Corbyn will be a disaster, that no-one will vote for him and that he'll tear the Labour party apart and yet his popularity continues to rise with the electorate and more and more voices within the Labour Party are adding their support to his campaign. The thing I liked about him from the off was that he was presenting the British people with a different way to do things, and as a result I felt that he might help to at least swing the balance of British politics somewhere towards the centre. The fascinating thing is that this 'different way' has been so well received that it's not inconceivable that he could win an election - and this despite the support of no-one in the mainstream media. The way things are going, if they don't find something to slander him with soon, he'll have to have an accident. Is his popularity rising with the electorate? Or just the Labour party? Well, the labour party itself has grown by 70,000 people in the last couple of months, most of whom have joined to vote for Corbyn. Those people are active and are likely to be voters - many of them will have voted Green or not at all when faced with a choice between near identical main parties last time out. It's not a huge number, but then a lot of people don't vote.

Left wingers in their own little world believing everyone wants the same , believing in some utopian left wing socialism as the panacea for our country. Outdated policies not supported by the majority of the voting public. This has nothing to do with how many people may "hate" the Tory party Mike , many more hate left wing politics.

Richard
By the country? Yes definitely. People may dislike the current government , but even some who dislike would find voting for a Corbyn led party totally unpalatable . Electable in the current leadership election? I very much hope he will be

I think it's more than people not liking the current government - people don't like the last few governments - I think there's an appetite for change, I think Corbyn can be a catalyst. I think the labour party have very little to lose.

Chindie Posted August 13, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted August 13, 2015 It really, really doesn't matter if Corbyn is elected as leader. He won't last to an election. He isn't supported by the power within the Labour Party. They will do away with him at the earliest opportunity, preferably in some way they can save face (bad run in council, etc elections) or otherwise by some dark arts back stabbing at the appropriate time. So nothing will change. I actually think he is capable of winning the race, and he might well do, wheeling Blair out to spook the horses suggests desperation on the part of Labour's established elite which makes me think he might do it. And in the right circumstances he could win a general election. But on the latter he won't. He won't have the opportunity. They will stifle him, prevent him revolutionising anything and they be rid of him before anything of any substance changes. Personally I'm not sure how much I agree with him, he has some ideas I can support on real basic, fundamental level and others I think are mad. But if by some miracle he manages to make real change happen, it'd be an interesting wildcard on the UK political stage.

What goes around comes around. Many of the people who have been voting may not have wanted a left wing party (many probably did, but weren't offered one). It's all the previous abstainers (and ex-Labour protest voters for SNP, Plaid, Greens - even LibDems) that will be JC's supporters. Yes, it probably will split the Labour Party. So be it, a bit of bloodletting is just what it needs.

Condimentalist
Left wingers in their own little world ...Typically patronizing Tory bollocks. I'm afraid this is rather the issue. Politicians (from both parties) spend their time being patronising about the possibility of alternatives to the technomanagerial neoliberal corporatist structure. Actually it's people's values that are at play here. Not everybody wants to live in Thatchers playground, and despite the rhetoric, these things are not inevitable.
