Popular Post mjmooney Posted June 30, 2023 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted June 30, 2023 When is a Forest not a Forest ?? The modern meaning of the word Forest = a large area covered chiefly with trees and undergrowth. That is NOT the medieval meaning of the word Forest. The medieval meaning of the word Forest = a forest was an area that was legally defined with specific boundaries , where the king claimed exclusive hunting rights. There didn't have to be a single tree there for it to be made a forest. So Sherwood Forest was a royal hunting preserve not a large wooded area. It did not extend into Yorkshire and it was not covered in trees. It contained heathland, villages, farmland and a town or two. Its boundaries were set but they did vary over the course of the Middle Ages. It was not exclusively owned by the King although crown demesne lands made up a significant portion of it. Forest law applied inside the boundaries of the forest and were onerous on landowners especially which is why Royal Forests were resented by the Barons and others and became a political issue.

I know they are only approximate territories rather than real borders, but interesting to note that the modern day borders to Scotland/Wales appear more or less on this map (and Norfolk). You might expect divisions to exist roughly where rivers or other geographical features are, but I can't make out too much evidence of that (Trent maybe?)
