Tayls
Seen that on one of the Australian news channels sites that has a live feed going. Appears to be true. Latest from a radio station is that the hostage takers are demanding to speak with Tony Abbott live on air... Milfner
Apparently they've got "packages" all over the city. And now this is being reported: @PzFeed 3m3 minutes ago BREAKING NEWS: Australian police say responding to 'incident' at Sydney Opera House. LondonLax
Yes, I'm in Sydney and watching on the news. One of the TV channels is across from the cafe and had a live camera running. Their building has been evacuated now and the police have asked for the cameras to be switched off. My wife's not far away at a major bank and her building has been closed with no one allowed in or out.

Tayls
Why would they send a priest in? Apparently that has been reported...

LondonLax
Why would they send a priest in? Apparently that has been reported... I don't think anyone has gone in or out as far as I know.
Ponky
A muslim religious "educator" had offered to assist police with the negotiations apparently but no negotiations have commenced so far as we know. I really hope they can sort this out quickly and safely, except for the scumbags who have done this.
LondonLax
It seems like two Arab police negotiators have arrived on the scene. Martin Place is the next station on my train line and I will have to go through there on the way home.
MrDuck
I'm less than convinced that the media broadcasting all that they can about police tactics and positions around the scene is helpful to the police.
sharkyvilla
Sadly inevitable that it would happen somewhere. Very difficult to stop individuals doing stuff like this. Hope it works out OK.
maqroll
Doesn't really fit the ISIS modus operandi; if these guys are real ISIS, those hostages would be dead. I'm thinking these are just local small timers with no idea what they're doing. Hope nobody is hurt, scary situation.
maqroll
You have to wonder if they targeted that cafe for the Christmas message on the window and the attention their flag would get hung above it.
MrDuck
More likely targeted the cafe cos it's opposite Channel 7 HQ...
LondonLax
It's a very central location in the financial district. The Reserve Bank of Australia is opposite and it's surrounded by a lot of bank HQs. There is a map here of the landmarks surrounding.
LondonLax
The local Murdoch tabloid has decided to jump the gun and issue a special 2pm commemorative edition where they imply all the hostages will die. The number of hostages has not been confirmed and the link to ISIS is just speculation. Edited December 15, 2014 by LondonLax
