Marka Ragnos Posted July 5, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted July 5, 2023 (edited) From long ago, when bands really did play live and didn't run live loops and recordings or even bring extra musicians just to sound like the record ... (although, tbf, plenty of indie bands do it today, but perhaps never at this level of fame or in front of such a huge audience.) Marka Ragnos Posted July 5, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted July 5, 2023 (edited) Not sure if these kids ever made any impact in the UK -- well, since they were actually good, they probably did better in the UK than here lol -- but a twee gem, for sure, a bit like the Pastels. Or imagine lush with the reverb turned down and few months of strong sertraline ... Edited July 5, 2023 by Marka Ragnos
Marka Ragnos Posted July 5, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted July 5, 2023 And while we're on the subject of twee, here's a stunning little forgotten piece of American pop candy, from early 2000s Colorado of all places, associated with the influential Elephant 6 label ...

Blimey. You forget about a band and then this pops up.

Apparently it's a single in the enormously expensive Impera boxset. Given it features Patrick Wilson and he's got his new film in the Insidious universe out today with the song attached to it, it's probably a case this was held back from Phantomime and then bolted onto limited edition rereleases as a bonus. Destined to be one of those curios in the discography that any band should have. Not bad though. The original is better but it works with Ghost and Wilson can sing a bit (obviously given his musical work, but you can tell he's not a band orientated singer by trade). Yeah, I think the original is better too, but it still works ok as a cover.

Marka Ragnos Posted July 8, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted July 8, 2023 (edited) This is a precious Alan Lomax recording on video. Give this one a 30 seconds or so for the singing to start ... incredible. Cheap guitar, fascinating playing style, mind-blowing blues. I think he opened for Robert Cray.
