sonic_bouma
id imagine the people most delighted about this ban are the newcastle united players.... Joseph Barton will have to use his undoubted intelligence and sophistication to go and find another weapon to gouge out his teammates eyes with.... i am also looking forward to the ban! he'll just resort to the trusted glassing i'd have thought! haha valid... perhaps the geordie players have already handed in a petition for an alcohol ban :winkold:
johnsonp
I'm looking forward to it and I smoke. I always smoke more when I am out on the lash (only smoke circa 5 a day normally can go up to 15 on a night out) by having the ban I will smoke less as I am too lazy to go outside on a regular basis. Another thing. I can see how the ban would work in pubs (going out to beer gardens) but where would the smoking area be for nightclubs who normally only have the entrance/exit

R.I.C.O.
Correct. There won't be anywhere to smoke in most nightclubs. At the Custard Factory in brum there is an outside area where I imagine you will be able to light up, but most clubs don't have this. I socially smoke sometimes, if it makes it harder for me to do that then I'm all for it.
lapal_fan
what will happen is they will probably turn some pubs into members only pubs, much like liberal or conservative etc etc clubs, in which its up to the owners. You'll get smoking pubs for smokers i imagine. but normal pubs, clubs and nightclubs will obviously be smoke free. and i think the stats show alot, 80% of this forum choose non-smoking as a good thing, which makes you wonder how ignorant the 20% of smokers are to make 100% of people smell! bickster Posted June 7, 2007 Moderator Share Posted June 7, 2007 **** stupid stupid stupid law I have to get signs for every door of my car telling people they are entering a no smoking workplace and if they find anyone smoking they should report them to..................................me. Now being as the only person likely to be smoking in my car is me - go figure the logic of that one out But get this, even if I'm not out working and I'm in my car for social and domestic reasons I'm still breaking the law by smoking in my car Oh yes nanny knows best, nanny knows how to talk shit better than anyone else How is that ridiculous? Your car is used by members of the public, therefore it is a public place. Tough, basically. Its ridiculous because now I HAVE to buy signs telling the public they can't smoke in my car, whereas for the last 8 years I've got by with telling them myself! So if they do find someone smoking in my car (given that there's only me and them) they have to report it to me, so they either have to grass themselves up (like I wouldn't have noticed) or report me to me. I find that a tad ludicrous Oh yes and I've just noticed the price of no smoking signs has gone up
LancsVillan Posted June 7, 2007 Moderator Share Posted June 7, 2007 For those who are looking forward to a smoke free atmoshpere, I hope none of you go to pubs as they will soon stink of BO, stale beer and less pleasant side effects of alcohol, belching and flatulence. Some clubs in Scotland have been looking at how to tackle this with fragrances being pumped out of fans.....

BOF Posted June 7, 2007 Moderator Share Posted June 7, 2007 I think the way the questions are asked in the poll very nearly turns this into a "Do you smoke, yes or no" poll. I enjoy the clean air in all public places in Ireland now, but was (and still am) uncomfortable with the restrictions on personal liberty that this law necessitated. It's very dangerous to be selifish at a time like this because at some point it will be your 'group' that are affected by changes.

One could argue Bri that's is also very selfish for one to inflict their polluting and damaging smoke upon others whose only course of action should they not be overly enamoured with such harmful fumes to be to either a) not socialise with that person/persons and/or not go to pubs/bars. I think smoking in the presence of others that have no choice about inhaling your fumes is the "selfish" action, IMO.
Jon
Oh yes and I've just noticed the price of no smoking signs has gone up Genuine question this gareth. Do you have to have "Official" no smoking signs are are you permitted to make your own, as long as they say the same thhing?

Some clubs in Scotland have been looking at how to tackle this with fragrances being pumped out of fans..... Reminds me of the "Hitchhiker's Guide" bit about the disco where the smell of rancid sweat was sprayed from nozzles... We've had the ban up here for a year, and it's brilliant. All the nonsense about pubs having to close because of loss of custom has been shown to be untrue. The only problem is the gaggle of smokers outside the doors of pubs, offices, etc. Next step is to drive them further down the road so we don't have to walk through them to get in. After that, the next goal will be to make them congregate in a field well away from built-up areas. But only when wind conditions permit.

I doubt many people have the facility to print on clear celluloid with adhesive on one side because of the wording of the law, I have to have a sign on every entry point to my place of work ie my car, thats five signs, even though passengers on;ly ever use three doors

TRL
Can't say I noticed the smell of sweat last time I was in a Dublin pub. I also can't see how the the smell of cigarette smoke can in anyway be described as 'nice'. Oh dont get me wrong, i understand the law and meaning of it, and i agree. But there is a big difference in the pub atmosphere. From beeing smokey and having your clothes smell, its turned the way that you become aware of all the other shite like sweat, dirt etc. Personally i dont smoke, but i like the smell of it and ive always gotten a good feeling to speak, when ive been near it. Why i dont know, probably some psychological shite.
