Things You Don't "Get"

We're back to the 'two approaches to alcohol' debate again.

Forgive me if I'm putting words in your mouth, @tonyh29, but you do seem to take the approach that routine consumption of small quantities of alcohol is a somehow a bad thing, while getting absolutely slaughtered in occasional massive binges is perfectly OK. I take the exact opposite view. A glass of wine or a beer with a meal, or at a social gathering (even a school play) seems perfectly natural behaviour to me. I'm not talking about getting drunk around kids, but then I don't drink to get drunk. I don't even like being drunk (after the first buzz), but I do love a nice wine, ale or malt whisky.

(Personally, I'd ban the consumption of cola in front of kids, it's a far more pernicious habit).  ;)

Ironically I’ve just got back from the pub after playing tennis  ,soft drinks for me , beers for my mates

As you say this discussion has come up before and i think my binge drinking preference is well documented

I did have a beer in Iceland beginning of June to check out the local tipple , but I struggled to finish it ! Apart from that my last proper drink was back in May , all be it that it went on for 3 days as part of a birthday weekend … for me there’s a sort of buzz and enjoyment with these day's , that I guess a lot of people won’t get in the same way I don’t get people that want a drink after work or with a meal   …

I don’t have problem with people that drink a beer or glass of wine with a meal or at a social gathering per se , and I wouldn’t say I see it as a bad thing , more something I just don’t get ….

but I just don’t see the need for one at a child’s play that goes on for an hour , sounds daft but for me it just seemed to be a bit disrespectful to the children .

I like a drink. I like drinking. Wine, beer, anything really. I like alcohol and I like the buzz it brings. But I almost only ever drink socially. Just having a beer or a glass of wine at home on my own after work on a weekday just doesn’t happen. A nice meal with friends, definitely a glass of wine or five. Football with mates in the pub, definitely a few pints of Guinness. A work party, I’ll happily drink till the sun comes up. But drinking alone? I just don’t do it.

I'm almost the complete opposite - unless drinking is the occasion, and we've gone to a place that sells very nice beer or wine, I don't often drink out, because I'd rather stick to the soft drinks than have a dull commercial lager (or as often seems to be the only alternative, Punk IPA). Towards the end of the day though, I'll quite often browse the selection and pick out a nice stout or have a dram of one of my whiskey collection, whack some music on, and slowly savour it over a couple of hours.  I resent paying through the nose for a pint of mediocre beer knowing I have much better at home

I don't drink to get drunk, though it's sometimes a happy accident if I end up at a pub with a good enough range to make me get carried away having one of everything.

I agree with you in principle, but not in practice.

I'm not a fan of day drinking or drinking in front of children and families, except at football / cricket / weddings, that kind of thing. But in the evening I'll happily have a drink, and once I start I find it quite hard to stop. Hate that feeling of waking up wishing you'd just not had those last few drinks.

Also got no problem with drinking alone. Well, sorry, I probably do have a problem 😳. But I don't have a moral problem with it. Find it a bit delusional when people take great pride in not drinking alone, and then find the tiniest excuse to socialise with people they don't even want to see so they can have a few drinks. Just go home and crack open a beer in front of the TV if you're that bothered.

I only drink like that at parties, and even then I pace myself to keep that level good buzz. Getting properly shitfaced just isn’t fun.

(Btw, look at us, a bunch of VT OT’ers pretending to have an active and meaningful social life 😅)

Would it be correct to assume that the supreme being has chosen wisely?

To be clear, I don’t either. I never made a conscious, moral or active decision never to drink alone, it’s more to do with the fact that I work out a lot and try to keep my other habits in line with that, so I save alcohol for social settings when it’s more fun and enjoyable anyway. I’m the same with snacks and sweets etc. I never buy them just for myself.  I also tend to fall into habits and «addictions» quite easily, so regularly drinking alone would potentially be a slippery slope for me, especially in the middle of a major life crisis like the one I’m going through this year. Finally, I don’t really want to normalise alcohol use for my son. I don’t want to taboo it either, and can have a glass of wine with a nice meal in front of him, but I don’t need him thinking alcohol is a natural, almost necessary, ingredient of everyday life.

My daughter does drama at some weekend theatre club and they put a play on end of each term in a local theatre for parents ,family etc

The play was about an hour 15 mins long , seems that 90% of the parents can't  manage this without a glass of wine or a beer

Don't get me wrong I'm not anti alcohol ,I don't get this notion that people have to drink the second they go anywhere  , more so if it involves supporting their children.

At our kids' last school, there was a choice of wine at parents' evening! Which I never tuned down, naturally.

Hope you made sure they gave you a generous pour. 👍🤣

Eating al fresco.

Yep, I hate it. Mrs Sidcow can't wait to set up a table amongst the wind, insects and scorching sun.
