chrisp65
Why are socialists not allowed to drink champagne? Are they allowed Cava (método tradicional, of course) or is that too much? The answer can be found in Robert Tressell's famous book, The Ragged-trousered Philanthropists. Tressell wrote that poverty was caused by a shortage of essential goods (food, clothing, shelter) and that productive capacity was wasted on producing useless luxuries for the rich, like Champagne. Champagne is particularly labour-intensive. So by consuming Champagne someone is helping to create a demand for a product which reduces the amount of essential goods available and therefore increases poverty. Therefore, socialists should not drink Champagne. I did not know this. Top referencing.
mockingbird_franklin
Just saw the front page of The Sun in the newsagents, they have conducted a poll where 64% of Sun readers say Brand is "not funny". This is front page news on the biggest selling paper in the country. saw it today, nice to know that 68% of sun readers don't know what the word hypocrite means, Edited December 5, 2014 by mockingbird_franklin

Popular Post The_Rev
This is the video. Brand comes out of it looking very good in my opinion, he makes some salient points, especially the ones about how The Sun are trying to spin everything about him into a celebrity gossip issue rather than a serious issue about wider problems. Demitri highlights this beautifully by thinking the car Brand is sitting in is the most important thing here. It's clearly not. Old media are running scared of new media, Brand is simply tapping into that to get his voice heard.

maqroll
When he dials down the annoying persona, he's good, because he's right on the money about a lot of things, IMO. The video above is a good illustration of him putting his point across without acting like a mook. But his interview on Newsnight made me want to choke him. Demitri_C
Demitri highlights this beautifully by thinking the car Brand is sitting in is the most important thing here Haha that was just abit of humour, for what its worth I actually did agree with everything he said and what you have highlighted its true, brand is turning the media. people may or not like brand but the guy is very intelligent no question Sadly I think brands career will get destroyed - anyone who tries to do what brands doing sadly will get taken out whether its whether they create lies about him in the media, false allegations against him who knows. but i have a feeling people are not liking what brand is creating and they will put a stop to it one way or another. Popular Post AVFCDAN
Just out of interest why is someone who has done alright for himself not allowed to highlight the inequalities in today's society? I don't think hes protesting about the wealth of marginal celebrities, its more like the billionaires of this world and the people with massive influence over media like Rupert Murdoch. Hes entitled to his opinion as much as any man on the street, just because he bothers to go out there and highlight his concerns doesn't mean he should be immediately shot down. Even from the passing interest i have given him i'm aware that he doesn't claim to have the answers, hes just asking for the people who do to get involved and try to change things. The British people really don't like people to get ideas above their station do they?
Jon
Just out of interest why is someone who has done alright for himself not allowed to highlight the inequalities in today's society? They are. The British people really don't like people to get ideas above their station do they? I don't think it's the 'British people' who have got a problem with it (bar the odd few). It's the tabloids that don't seem to like it. I have a lot of time for Rusky Brand and what he's doing and his POV. My only real worry is that a lot of the younger generation, a large dissaffected mass of voters, take heed of his call not to vote at the GE, because IMO most of those voters would probably have gone Green. I don't see who that's really helping, other than 'the establishment', as I don't see his 'revolution' happening any time soon.

I wouldn't even argue against that but it doesn't make the issues he is highlighting any less important. He probably is a hypocrite and i don't have the time or desire to argue back and forth about his actions or motives but at least hes out there highlighting the problems and trying to do something about it, which is more than can be said for 98% of the population in this country and the exact reason why we face this "illusion" of democracy. I also get the impression that a lot of hate aimed at him from the British public comes from pure and simple jealousy, not because of his character or his hypocritical actions at times but purely because we hate winners. We hate the fact that someone from a humble background is doing well for himself, living the playboy lifestyle and marrying katy perry, to be fair that one does annoy me! Jon
He probably is a hypocrite I don't see how. Bit of an egotist, maybe. Hypocrite? How so? Man earning a lot of money from comedy, film and TV is still permitted to hold left wing views and attack 'the establishment'. Tony Benn was seen as coming from the establishment (his background was anyway). But he still hated it, and committed his life to rallying against it. I agree with what you have said i'm just playing devils advocate really. Having said that i don't think he has done himself any favour by trying to flog a book for 20 quid while claiming that socially inequality and material possessions etc.. are something we need to get away from.
