Demitri_C
Looks like I am going Malta end of March, anyone been? What is best place to stay? Any advice or comments about it would be welcome as this place would be helpful
tonyh29
I stayed in St Julian which is where the bars and nightlife seemed to be... Was quite a young crowd in a lot of the places ( 20's ) and a lot of clip joints so go careful as I'm sure they won't be cheap... Was also a casino and small rocky beach there In terms of the island hire a car and drive around would be my advice , but hire a small car as the roads are pretty shit( def get one with Sat nav ) Head over to Vittoriosa it's quite pretty and they do an oldie worldie Knights of St. John's reenactment which is interesting ( if a bit long ) ... Few restaurants and museums there as well I would definitely suggest visiting the Hypogeum ... But you will need to book that weeks maybe even months in advance Doesn't have a wow factor as such imo but it was decent enough for a long weekend type break Edited September 24, 2014 by tonyh29

chrisp65
It depends what you want from the place, as Tony says St Julians for a younger clubbier holiday - if cost isn't an issue stay at the Dragonara it's truly decent and modern. If you want a bit of old school charm, stay at the Phoenicia at the entrance to Valletta. Try and use one of the ancient buses in or out of the main bus terminus, that's as good as any funfair ride. Valletta is good for a bit of cafe people watching. If you do hire a car, make it the smallest cheapest thing you can find, it'll be easier to park and you will be king of the junctions where the rules are, flexible. If the weather is half decent it's worth going over to Gozo for a look, quiet with a nice coast line. Mdina is also quite nice for a quiet walk around. Sliema promenade for cafes, chips and kiss me quick brits abroad experience. I work over there a little bit, I'm back over at the end of the month, I like it but as Tony says, no one stand out wow feature.
Demitri_C
Thanks chrisp65, i think i am going to be staying at Silema. Whats food like out there?
chrisp65
Well if you want pizza and chips and all day english breakfast there's a restaurant every other 20 metres that'll see you right - this time of year a good few will be beginning to close for the winter season, once October is out some areas can look a bit like a British seaside town, shutters down waiting for Spring. Food generally is either British or Italian. But best thing to do is ask a local where you are staying where they recommend, get yourself an authentic Maltese rabbit stew. I had a flat on Tower Road, Sliema for a while, a good evening is a stiff march around the coast path / promenade around to Spinola Bay where there's a whole stack of places to eat. If you want to impress the missus with your knowledge of backstreet restaurants, book a table in advance at Rubino in Valletta. Absolutely my fave restaurant anywhere. Small, quirky and just brilliant. If you like fish, get a taxi down to Marsaxlokk (Mar - sha - schlock) and try somewhere like Tartarun on a few others. Had a mental meal down there one time when we block booked the place and gave the chef / owner free reign to serve us whatever he liked with the remit being: pretend this is a cooking competition, try and win it! Needless to say I wasn't paying - the guy that was paying bought all the staff there from manager to dishwasher a brandy and a cigar at the end of the night. chrisp65
yeah, I've read your first post properly now! end of March is quite a good time, not much rain and the Maltese are winding up for Easter which is quite big over there

tonyh29
People look for different things in a hotel ... Make it more than 20 paces from a Starbucks and the Americans go mental and score it low
Demitri_C
yeah that is true, alot of reviews also saying the maltese are quite rude people? Edited October 15, 2014 by Demitri_C
tonyh29
I was looking for the In Guardia in Birgu and stopped a lady walking her dog to ask ..she didn't know either but then flagged down a passing car and asked them if they knew .. and he pulled over got out and give me directions and also when we parked up in Valletta to go to the Hypogeum and old boy clearly sussed what we were looking for and told us where the entrance was as it was down a side street and not obvious to find there were various other interactions with locals and I'd say without doubt all of them were friendly .... obviously I can't speak for every visitor but my view would be nothing but positive

I used to walk to the Golden sands beach every morning , always remember this ubiquitous chirping noise , but for the life of me could never see who was making it . Also got a lovely blow- job off a trans- sexual , probally the best i've had , but this aint the time to be tip-toeing out the closet .
