chrisp65
Yep, agree with Ginko there, an invasion of privacy and theft are not more acceptable because it's a pretty girl that's a bit famous. Nobody would accept me stealing someone's car 'because they're famous' or raiding their bank account, so how can it possibly be acceptable for me to steal photo's of their genitalia? It makes no sense. By the same token, anyone recording their genitalia on a device they clearly don't understand, or letting their current partner film them **** is frankly a little bit stupid. I'd say quite a good rule for people to live by would be if you really really don't want unknown foreign masturbators doing their thing over your pictures, don't record your sex sessions.
Ginko
I agree Chris, and I would absolutely live by that rule if I were even a little bit famous, but I think that's the point really. Yeah, it's a small sacrifice at the end of the day, but it's the principle of the whole thing. It says a lot about our society that someone would even have to make that kind of sacrifice because some people are so callous and utterly pathetic that they would dedicate large amounts of their time to hack into someone's personal life and post private and intimate moments of their life online. darrenm
I think it's a bit more than just the horrific embarrassment of nude photos being leaked though, isn't it? It's a complete invasion of privacy and if I were a celebrity I'd be feeling incredibly violated and now be thinking about how even the things I do in the privacy of my own home are no longer safe. Yes, there is a point to be said that maybe if you're that famous it would probably be a good idea to not take nude photos or do sex tapes, but it does go against everything that our society preaches, especially America, the so-called Land of the Free. I don't think anyone should not be able to do something that most people do around the world just because they're famous. They are people too at the end of the day. I think this is just another example of the way society has been heading for a while now. This whole superficial culture we have going is coming to a head. Yes the E! 'News', Heat magazines and members of paparazzi are scum and are highly responsible, but the people who read them have to take a share of the responsibility too since they keep them in business. Let's face it. If it was your phone that had been hacked and private photos or videos of you or your family leaked on the internet and viewed by millions, you'd be absolutely devastated. I don't really see how people can be so cold as to try and justify that it's okay or not too bad. As DDID mentioned earlier, it's not like I've never watched porn before, but that's done with someone's consent and in a controlled way. This is completely different. I'm agreeing with everything both you and DDID have said but I'm not sure about the porn with someone's consent. It's a vast spectrum of consent that you'd expect to be given in porn. Are most porn stars desperate for the money? On drugs and need the money? Being pressured by an abusive pimp/partner? Heading to destruction on a hedonistic drug-fuelled lifestyle? I'm never gonna know so I try not to think about it too much (of course steering clear of anything which is obviously repulsive in its subject matter). Of course the basic theft of these people's personal photos is wrong. It's not their own fault for not appreciating the potential for theft. But they must have appreciated that allowing uploading to iCloud meant that even just some Apple employees were going to have a good look at their junk. I'm positive that Google employees will have seen my old man at some point before I've deleted from autobackup.
darrenm
I'd say that's a pretty crap rule to have to live by. A rule where you have to curtail your own enjoyment of something because other people can't be trusted to show some self control. The sexual gratification that people are attaining from these pics/vids is non consensual. Think about that for a second... I'm not comparing it to the physical act of rape, but you are taking pleasure without permission. That is a fact. So do you think it's a crap rule to live by that you have to lock your front door when you go out? What's the world coming to when people can't go out without fear of their possessions being stolen if they leave it unprotected.
Dr_Pangloss
They are celebrities ergo I do not give a shit. A lot of them can cash in on this if they play their cards right. Some will be more famous, others can sell stories about the events. There's been quite a lot of backlash about this invasion of privacy by left leaning individuals who celebrated the Snowden leaks despite both being technically 'stolen'. Pretty funny all round. Have deleted the second half of that post because I remembered having a wank over some chick I see in Morrison's the other day. As for the first half - that's not even close to the same thing. Their possessions WERE protected, apparently.

It's only because that in a fair society we consider theft to be wrong that it's criminal. Theft isn't a new thing, it's only the electronic bit which is. dont_do_it_doug.
Fair one Darren. Doesn't make it any more savoury. Theft is theft, this is on the really low end for me because of the sensitive, private nature of what is being stolen. Why are we making excuses for it? There's been quite a lot of backlash about this invasion of privacy by left leaning individuals who celebrated the Snowden leaks despite both being technically 'stolen'. Pretty funny all round. So you're tarring all celebrities by the same brush then. You're essentially saying it's a fair trade off because they're famous and so therefore they should never be allowed any privacy? Not all celebrities are the attention-seeking, there's-no-such-thing-as-bad-publicity types. In fact I'd say that Jennifer Lawrence is one of the least deserving celebrities to endure this sort of treatment. She comes across as very funny, down-to-earth and grateful for her success. This is all besides the point of course, as everyone, no matter whether they are famous or not, has a right to privacy. If they had done something outrageous and it had backfired on them then yes, they'd be deserving, but they took some private photos on their phone and against their better judgement uploaded it to the cloud. Even though the risk is there, the expectation is that this information remains private. As for comparing the Snowden thing and the release of important information to the public, it's just daft in my opinion. You're comparing people's personal and private information that is of no consequence to society to corporate and government secrets that the public should be aware of. The two are completely incomparable and I don't know how anyone can fail to see the difference.
