He needed the rest of the team to step up and give him some support, one player can't carry a team against an opponent like Germany. Messi's performance was a disgrace, spent most of the game coasting, effort level wasn't there and his end product wasn't either. It was really his last chance to really do it at a world cup and he didn't quite live up to expectations despite the odd flashes of brilliance at times during the tournament. Argentina deserve credit for actually getting to the final despite being so negative but thankfully their dour football couldn't lift the biggest prize.
