GarethRDR
Still wondering why as Lambert said we would be waiting until after the world cup? Obviously because we've got to wait for Messi, Schweinsteiger, Dante and Robben to all get back over here before we can agree personal terms.

Villan4Life
this article 5 years ago yesterday!! shocking that linked with Cavani & Falcao but now linked with no one of that class! how times have changed! didn't know we was linked with Cavani before http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/south-american-hot-shots-aim-97269#.U7qnxozDAq4.twitter TWO of South America’s hottest striking talents have issued “come and get me” pleas to Martin O’Neill. Edinson Cavani, a six-foot tall Uruguayan international, who plays for Palermo in Serie A, and River Plate’s Colombian international Radamel Falcao are both trying to engineer moves to the upper end of the Premier League. Both are in high demand not only because of their talent but also their availability with their clubs looking to set up quick deals. Cavani, 22, is currently valued at £12.8 million by Palermo but the Italians will probably have to accept far less. West Ham had been tracking him for some time and saw an offer rejected last summer before pulling out of a move when they were quoted £14.2 million earlier this year. Falcao appeared on the verge of signing for Benfica last week but then reports suggested that Liverpool had lodged an offer to sign the 23-year-old. But agents working on his behalf have contacted Villa within the last few days to try to set up a deal. O’Neill is on the look-out for quality additions all over the pitch. His priorities are not up front but remain getting a centre-back and a midfielder. It is understood Matthew Upson, Sylvain Distin and Wes Brown are being looked at for the defensive position while a move for David Bentley still looks likely. Nicknamed ‘El Matador’, Cavani starred at the 2007 South American Youth Championship and signed for Palermo in January, 2007. He scored an astonishing goal on his debut in a home league match against Fiorentina, coming on in the 55th minute and netting a volley reminiscent of Marco van Basten’s in the 1988 European Championships. Falcao plays for Juan Pablo Angel’s former club in Argentina and his current asking price is slightly over £6.4 million, although a smaller sum is likely to nab him. Villa were heavily linked in the Argentine press with a move for the player referred to by his nickname ‘El Tigre’ 18 months ago but nothing materialised. The Colombian has a scoring record of 34 goals in 88 League games for his club side though a serious injury in 2005 hampered his career. Falcao has suffered from a number of niggling injuries as a direct result of tearing his anterior cruciate ligaments three years ago. Now back to full fitness he is living up to his early promise and looks set for a move to Europe this summer. O’Neill has been mulling over a move for Sweden’s young hot-shot Marcus Berg but it is believed Fulham and Tottenham have stolen a march on them by firming up their interest.

Amo69
Signing a Falcao or Cavani would have shown real intent. I reckon Lerner would have sanctioned the moves too.

Tony
I would be pretty sure that Cavani and Falcao did not have the reputations back then as they do now. so little be known back then it most likely would not have been a sign of intent. I know personally I first heard of Cavani at Napoli and Falcao at Porto

CarewsEyebrowDesigner
It would be nice if we took more of a risk with foreign players rather than playing it safe. Although I guess it is easier to take a chance on young talent and sell them for mega bucks when your position in your respective league is safe.
