villa4europe
come to post the same thing, the big boys will be playing meaningless friendlies here there and everywhere making millions on the process like everything else in football at the moment even a 2 week break gets turned in to a money making exercise
villa4europe
maxwell, lucas moura and marquinhos have come on for psg "they're going to be weaker this half with those changes" must be horrible being a psg fan
LondonLax
The next league game is the 11th. If there was a winter break it would be this period here which would be off. The New Years game is the last game then the next game is a week or two later with the FA Cup 3rd round bring moved back.
maqroll
I think the fans deserve a paid winter break

CarewsEyebrowDesigner
I would have it after this weekend. Two weeks rest, then off we go. I don't see anything unreasonable about that.
VillaChris
Neither do I. And for any club stupid enough to go abroad to play friendlies then don't be surprised if they got a ton of injuries in the run in so it would hurt them more on the playing side long term. Jimzk5
Being discussed that it might come in for the 2019 season the reason being it could help the national team, of course that is a load of bollocks The only way I'd be okay with this is if they left the Christmas games alone and had a 2 week break in January
Xela
Its been said on here before but clubs only want a break so they can jet off to Asia and play in lucrative friendlies. If a break is coming I'd stipulate that the club can't organise anything abroad in that time.

VillaChris
Think it's a good idea. I love the xmas fixture list and given the attendances on boxing day and NYD no chance the clubs will want it during then. January is a pretty depressing month tbh, the FA cup 3rd round isn't what it was but still wouldn't touch that. Put it in the two week period after that, just have one round of league games and league cup semi finals (that could be just one leg at neutral venue) to reorganise then. HanoiVillan
As noted above, any sympathy I might have once had for the idea has been removed by clubs jetting off to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur to play meaningless friendlies and get jet lag. I know domestic football must be ever so dreary by comparison, but tough **** luck.
Avfc96
All a winter break will do is see the likes of United, Chelsea, City and Liverpool etc jet off to the other side of the world to play against each other as they are doing at the moment. A winter break won't help the national team, hiring a decent manager and sorting out the absolute mess that is our coaching system will do that. PaulC
Yes a lot of these teams who have winter breaks go off and play in friendlies our tournaments around the world. We can't use that as an excuse in the euros. Spain had a much shorter winter break than usual and Griezmann played a load more games than any english player and ended up player of the tournament. Boxing day football is special, without it some people would find it difficult to get through the christmas period
sne
Looks like it might happen the season after next, in the PL at least. Quote The Premier League is happy in principle with a plan to allow for a two-week winter break beginning in 2020, Sky Sports News understands. The proposals mean there will be no weekend without Premier League football - but the fixtures will be staggered so that there are five Premier League games on one weekend, and five on the next. That would allow for all 20 Premier League teams to have a free weekend, and in effect a 13-day break between matches. The EFL has already stated the break will not apply to them because they have too many games. They need every weekend available to fulfil 46 fixtures for each team. The decision now rests with the Football Association which, if these proposals go forward, has to make the historic call to move all FA Cup fifth round matches to a mid-week, with no replays. The Scottish Premiership shuts down for the first three weeks in January, while Ligue 1, the Bundesliga, Serie A and La Liga also enjoy winter breaks. http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11269453/premier-league-happy-in-principle-with-two-week-winter-break-plan Just imagine how many drunken benders, tabloid scandals and promotional tours to Dubai and China there will be time for now. VillaChris
Interesting proposal. I largely support it but think timing would've been better after third round FA cup in early January rather than middle of February. Just waiting now for another 10 posts of people not reading the article and saying "you can't scrap boxing day football" as on the first page.
