choffer Posted February 19, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted February 19, 2014 This might be a silly question, but as someone who's only ever bought one car, and that was from Black Horse, I don't really know how dealerships work. Best site for advice on buying from a dealer: http://www.carbuyingguide.org.uk/index.php Can't wait to try some of those tips out on the Audi dealer next month when I'm in for an A5 (Coupe).
Stevo985 Posted February 19, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted February 19, 2014 Some good stuff in there. Although it's made me quite nervous! And made me realise how much of a mug I was last time I bought a car. Knew what I want, found it and basically paid the price (think i got something pathetic knocked off like £100)
choffer Posted February 19, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted February 19, 2014 Same here. I particularly enjoyed the bit where he said "nobody would ever buy a car without taking it out for a test drive first" as it dawned on me that I dispensed with that particular formality altogether last time I got a new car
Stevo985 Posted February 19, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted February 19, 2014 Haha I at least test drove mine. But I was so complimentary about it, the guy was probably licking his lips. My negotiation consisted of "any flexibility on the price?" "No" "Here you go then"
choffer Posted February 19, 2014 VT Supporter Share Posted February 19, 2014 I was good on the negotiations last time but for some reason I was so focussed on that side of things that I completely forgot to actually have a go on the car. They are swines though - they decided that I'd screwed them down so much on the price and part-ex value that I had to tax the car myself. If I'd not already signed my car over and given them a sizeable deposit at that point I'd have told them to go jump but they sneakily left it to the last minute and tried to sneak it in without me noticing. They make estate agents look like paragons of virtue and integrity.

Kingfisher
Just bought a mercedes 190e 1990, 90k on the clock two previous owners. The original owner kept it in a garage, rarely drove it and washed it once a week. He passed away and it was in his widows possession for 4 years and never moved until she went into an old people's home. Now it's mine - £350. It looks showroom new.

Kingfisher
What you really need is a rusty mk3 golf. I happen to know of one that has just come on the market.
chrisp65
well if it's non snow and ice fun and you're not packing bags of gear, go for a nice simple Mazda MX-5 if it needs to be a little bit more practical and spacious the world's your lobster but a Volvo V40 will confuse everyone in this thread
