Good result last night although worth bearing in mind Italy are a lot weaker than they were. Southgate generally does do par for the course but the problem is he doesn't win the matches that really matter, those tight ones where you need that tactical edge, like the WC semi v Croatia or the Euro Final v Italy. France was difficult I'll give him that but we still had a very good chance especially with how France performed on the day.
On results alone you could probably just about give him a pass but it's those big matches where he should be earning his money to give us an edge and he just doesn't. If we're serious about winning something we need a better manager, unless by some chance we get seriously lucky with another draw.
On top of that his comments/opinions just wind me up, he ties himself in knots with his hypocrisy and double standards on player selection.
I'm resigned to the fact he will be manager at Euro 2024 and I hope England win but I find it hard to have any confidence they will based on the previous 3 tournaments under Southgate. Anything less than a trophy at the next tournament really should spell the end.
The FA probably would have kept him anyway. Worth remembering they kept Capello after the 2010 world cup and Hodgson after the disastrous 2014 world cup where they finished bottom of the group!
The VAR officials from the Spurs - Liverpool f*ck up are back for the next round of fixtures. They're not in the VAR room though, just fourth official and assistant ref.
It's all well and good saying we've had a difficult start and they're 'free hits' but we're actually 6 points worse off than last season from the same fixtures.
I think we really need to consider our tactics, we have enough quality to have more of a go with the likes of Daly, Salmon, Leon, Hanson, Dali (when they're back). When we go forward we can score goals against anyone but we're just too negative v the 'big' teams, especially when we get our noses in front.
So sounds like it's going to be a shield with Aston Villa/Aston Villa FC, 1874 and a star with the lion facing to the left, all done in claret and blue.
I just hope it's not too busy.
Hope this is resolved quickly but I doubt it based on similar cases. Important that we don't trigger the buy clause if we suspect he could be facing a lengthy ban.
Thought he did well. Made some good runs in behind and linked the play pretty well. Should have probably scored his first chance but he kept going and got one eventually. I'd like to think he's done enough to be involved again.
