If they lose tonight I will feel confident top 5 is done but if they win the gap is down to 8 with a game in hand so wouldn't be entirely comfortable.

Yep, even though the team looked a lot weaker than usual only 3 players were actually rested and 2 of those have had injury issues this season.

From what I saw we gave a good performance in the first half but man city ran out deserved winners in the 2nd. The referee gave us nothing though and it gave them momentum at points we should have had fouls.

Yep we should have backed ourselves to outscore them as you say. Might have still lost but at least there wouldn't have been any regrets.
