  1. SG has two different ways of playing out of possession. Sometimes we press higher and have more possession as s result but also risk getting cut open in transition. Other times we focus on getting back into shape and defending in some sort of mid block, leading to less possession. The last two games have been more of the latter, similar to when SG first arrived and focus was on keeping a tighter shape.
  2. Agree with this. He did well IMO and was impressive breaking up play, but wasn’t involved that much in build up with just 26 touches.
  3. Watkins has more attempts because he works constantly to get them. For all his faults he’s still very much a self-made man when it comes to opportunities: he steals those loose balls, runs and makes himself available and so on. I wish he’d have a higher hitrate too but it’s no coincidence he usually has quite a few attempts.
  4. Clubs in a relegation fight often start picking up results and this season is no different. A few months ago, people were saying teams would stay up with lower points than ever, 32 could be enough. Now it’s starting to look the opposite, more points could be needed than in years. Burnley, Everton and Leeds have better form than most in the league and maybe Southampton should worry.
  5. Teams are different though. I believe Man City change captain now and again and Pep stays out of it, now it’s Gundogan and he doesn’t seem to shout more than the others. Man City seem very much controlled by Pep at the touchline.
  6. That shot was very, very good. But the overall impression is he looks troubled, physically not in great shape, reluctant to go into duels, hesitant and doubting himself. He’s so obviously not enjoying this (which may be understandable after this season).
  7. When Coutinho agreed to come he had talks with Gerrard, where Gerrard surely promised him all the game time he could possibly want. Coutinho’s priority is to make it to the World Cup. Gerrard would probably rather quit then bench Coutinho now. I can actually understand Gerrard in this case, but it’s got the team in an awkward position.
  8. It’s not a question of left or right. They have the same role, the one the others give the ball in midfield and who starts the attacks by running and/or playing a vertical pass. When Coutinho first came SG played them both for a number of games and it didn’t work. Playing both also means one less striker as potential outlet.
  9. The main reason why we give the ball away is that our main way of attacking is very direct. Villa progress the ball faster up the pitch than almost every other team, and playing with high risk and a lot of one-touch passes (sometimes on a level the players can’t control) often leads to losing possession and having to start over.
  10. Very true. With that front 3 at least chances are created, two strikers makes defending less easy for the opposition.
  11. Really poor up until the sub and goal, better afterwards. Good to get two strikers on and trying to move their defenders around more, we looked very static before. Ideally we should put Buendia on instead of PC early 2nd half.
  12. Nice gesture from Dean to secure a Villa win by resting Sargent and Gilmour.
  13. I know some don’t rate Digne but having him back should be a boost. Chambers and Tim will have important roles in the early build up.
  14. Bailey over Buendia and only one striker isn’t promising. But nice to see Chambers and Tim, and having Digne back.
  15. Wtf, Liverpool aren’t supposed to drop points until we play them.
  16. Ideally you’d want to keep Mings/Konsa to have better back-up options, but keeping previous starters around the team can be difficult. They may not wish to stay (like Targett) or risk spreading negativity. I also wonder what type of CB’s he’s after.
  17. I would like to see Buendia being the main creator today and Coutinho on the bench for this game. Can’t see SG ever benching Coutinho though.
  18. Ok excellent was a stretch, but I stand by him being good on the ball.
  19. Some clubs get by playing failed strikers in central midfield. By the way, couldn’t Keinan Davis be a decent midfielder in a parallell world? Good size, athletic and excellent on the ball, just can’t finish.
  20. Wouldn’t that mean we valued Sanson at 19, if we got CC plus cash? I wasn’t being too serious, but from the little I’ve seen and read about CC I hope he’s not meant to be a new starter.
  21. If SG plays both Coutinho and Buendia, I hope he has a plan to try and move their defence around a bit more. Otherwise it could be like those fairly recent games against Newcastle and Watford where they park the bus, we try and play through centrally but create zero actual chances.
