  1. He’s been partly brilliant, shame about the rest of the team though. Jack leaving to win trophies hasn’t gone as expected so far. Not even the **** community shield has he won yet.
  2. Absolutely. It also shows that finishing up to 7th place or so isn’t that hard, midtable teams move up and down between seasons and it’s sometimes hard to even explain why. This season has been a bit different though when it comes to the 6 big clubs, who with the exception of Man U have done well. Often a couple of the big clubs flop and finish outside the top 6.
  3. Coutinho is doing a great job keeping the MotM performances down until a deal is done. Makes other suitors stay away.
  4. I used to love Witsel but not sure about him nowadays. His type would suit a change to a more possession based style but is he fit enough? So far it's all just paper talk but it does sound like Villa are planning for a different transfer approach, going for 30-35 year olds. It makes sense in a way because young players will want to play in Europe and improve their careers by being seen, while older players may be happy with a lucrative contract instead of Europe. It could work if those older players have an Ashley Young type of mentality, but could also be risky in case they don't. Doing a light "rebuild" by signing a number of older players in key positions will also make it necessary to rebuild again pretty soon.
  5. I doubt Carney will play for Villa again, looks like he's made his decision (and Gerrard his). It may be the first visible setback in the success story of the academy but hopefully it's only a special case and doesn't become any sort of pattern.
  6. I know, it’s funny how Liverpool fans have suddenly decided he’s trash.
  7. Joking aside, I’m seriously not sure Phillips will remain the same player without Bielsa being his mentor (and slave driver). Another reason to think twice about signing him.
  8. Seeing the hate against Jota tonight, Wolves may even be able to buy him back. Doesn’t look like he’ll play much the rest of this season.
  9. That pundit who called Villarreal a disgrace, where is he now?
  10. Wasn’t the debunking about how transfer ideas came up (mainly from Lange and SG), who brings lists and so on? The idea that Purslow has opinions on signings still lives I think. He is after all in charge of the club, he takes care of transfer negotiations and says yes or no if a player is seen as too expensive. Gerrard: ”"I don’t control transfer fees or wages. All I can do is give my opinion to Johan Lange, Christian Purslow and the owners. They are watching the games and they will make the final decision” https://birminghammail.trem.media/sport/football/transfer-news/coutinho-transfer-aston-villa-gerrard-23315454
  11. If they have set their sights on Kondogbia, part of the reason could be that some of the other alternatives are too hard to get. Many top clubs would want Kamara for free.
  12. Nice to see him and Ings working better together.
  13. Absolutely. As long as the injury has healed you'd expect him to work his way back by making shorter appearances. Just curious about what Gerrard's plans are for him.
  14. What's happening with Nakamba now? When he was out injured people were counting the days to his return, now he's been back for over a month but still didn't get on the pitch against Norwich. Is the plan to use him like Smith sometimes used to, against the most difficult opposition where Villa are expecting to spend most of the game defending? If so will he be on the bench against Burnley and then suddenly appear vs Liverpool?
  15. Sounds far fetched Villa would offer him £330K per week, that's more than Kante makes at Chelsea.
  16. Triple salary sounds generous, Capology claims to have verified he’s at £110k per week now.
  17. Have you seen Jimenez play after the injury? I guess not.
  18. Are all Wolves players top 8 level players? Watkins is better than Jimenez these days so if Jimenez is top 8 level, Watkins should be higher. There is no top 8 level. There is six big clubs and a bunch of midtable teams trying to break into that club. Sometimes those hopefuls finish 8th, sometimes 13th, often with basically the same squad.
  19. I’m not that concerned about SG being involved and having opinions about transfers, that’s pretty much standard after all even if the Brentford model is different. I was a little more concerned about other parts in that article, where it’s said there will hardly be signings of players under the age of 24 for some time.
  20. SG talked about the transfer process here: https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/aston-villa-transfers-steven-gerrard-23645720 "And that's what we will try and do, we will have a combination of data, analysis, people watching them and also a collective discussion and we all have to be on the same page before we make big decisions for this club. I'll make the final decision of course I will, but I'm very happy with the support we have in place."
  21. I'm not saying we don't need to improve, we do. But you don't have to have a killer squad to finish 8th or even 6th most seasons - one or two of the big clubs usually have a crap year and the teams below tend to move up and down without making huge changes. West Ham came 6th last season, Wolves 7th for two seasons before that and even Burnley finished 7th with largely the same squad as now.
  22. But there's quite a lot of defensive duties on the number 8s, acting a bit like fullbacks out of possession, which could take a while for Buendia to get used to.
  23. JV:s team with that adjustment looks good (Luiz - Nakamba - Buendia as the midfield 3, Coutinho as 10 and Watkins/Ings up top).
  24. Southampton are "only" at 65/1 to go down now. Don't think they'll go down but if they did, that could be the worst way of doing it. Being caught by surprise when you've already checked out mentally.
