  1. Konsa starting proves we really need a new CB at this point.
  2. They can play together, it’s just not very effective.
  3. This is a typical Nakamba game where we expect to have little possession (not that we usually have that much).
  4. It’s not that much weakened. No Milner.
  5. Could this be the game where Martinez gets a second yellow for time wasting?
  6. To be a possession side you have to press a lot, which Watkins is good at.
  7. Not sure Dyche tactics involve that much passing in midfield.
  8. Good news! Still curious about the wages and the length of the contract.
  9. I’m less keen on Phillips after how he’s looked after the latest injury. Not convinced he is the same player without Bielsa’s training.
  10. Gerrard in a Sky interview speaks about the summer: "We have got a lot of volume here, so I see it as more about quality than quantity," he says of the summer ahead. "I don't think we need to go and rip everything up and start again. /…/ ”I don't think we need numbers. We've already got a lot of options. But there are areas of the team where we would like to add some quality because we think that can help us take huge strides." https://www.skysports.com/amp/football/news/11095/12609564/steven-gerrard-exclusive-interview-aston-villa-boss-striving-to-close-the-gap-to-the-elite-ahead-of-liverpool-showdown
  11. Villa rarely have high possession figures, was much the same under Smith. Wouldn’t say we’re a typical counter attacking team, like Spurs under Conte, but we’re near the top when it comes to progressing the ball quickly. Relatively few passes and quick attacks, often making difficult passes leading to lost possession. In the 7-2 against Liverpool, Villa had 30% possession which is logical as Liverpool went behind in the 4th minute.
  12. OK, checked some of it myself. Under Smith this season we conceded an average of 1.73 goals per game. Under Gerrard it’s been 1.17. Last season we conceded 1.21 on average.
  13. Not that surprising Smith’s numbers for this season were bad considering missing players and most of all the constant experimenting with the backline. But surprising Gerrard’s figures are that good, relatively speaking, as 4th or 5th best in those categories. Would’ve been interesting to see comparisons between Villa last season and this season too.
  14. That’s Rangnick’s favourite formation, often used by counterpressing teams like Leipzig and Salzburg. I guess the shape is supposed to give more vertical layers which would suit that way of playing. Ralf tried it at Man United for a while but wasn’t a success there (perhaps predictable).
  15. Their big dip also had a lot to do with their goalkeeper Raya being injured. The back-up keeper had a nightmare.
  16. It seems likely fans will be more patient if they like the players as well as leading people at the club. As Carragher implied, fans often talk about feeling more connected to the club when homegrown youth are having success in the first team (like Spurs under Poch or Arsenal under Arteta). Having likeable owners probably helps too if the alternative is some faceless private equity-company. You would still assume the patience ends if the club is relegated, of course.
  17. Apart from discussing individual transfers I’m also curious how the club is looking at things like squad planning with a longer horizon than the current season. Do Villa have enough players coming through in different positions, how do we avoid difficult generation shifts and so on. You would assume those were questions for the sporting director and it would be interesting to know more about how they are taken care of.
  18. Clubs seem to interpret the role of sporting director/director of football/technical director differently. Someone like Paratici at Spurs is responsible for appointing a new manager, which at Villa seems to be mainly on Purslow’s table. Lange wasn’t recruited as a big name in the business and, at least from the outside, it looks like his role isn’t as big as some of his colleagues at other clubs. Villa’s summer of 2020 was brilliant IMO with Martinez, Cash and Watkins signed. But people often say transfers are long term projects, so Lange beginning on the job just a month earlier could perhaps mean he wasn’t that involved in those signings? If Lange is judged only from the January window 2021 onwards he hasn’t been involved in that many deals yet.
  19. The bellend aspect shouldn’t be overlooked. I’m not saying he’s responsible for the apparent nightmare that is Man United’s dressing room but he’s been involved in enough leaks and manager feuds. A team shouldn’t have too many players with their own clothing lines or rapping careers.
  20. I agree, with the way Cash has been improving this season we now have two great full backs. Just need to add second options.
  21. But what about saying Ashley Young is getting old now? It’s not easy for him to play LB against pacy wingers these days and that’s not criticizing imo, only natural. I’d expect Digne to be able to play at the same level at least 4-5 more years, maybe longer. Age is more of an issue when it comes to transfer value as that usually drops around 29-30. If we for some reason would want to sell Digne when he’s 30 we wouldn’t get much.
  22. It should be easier to sell Konsa, at least he’s been playing regularly and is by now a somewhat established Prem CB (a year or just 6 months ago he was also seen as a top talent by many). Bailey could be harder to sell as he hasn’t been playing much, so it’s either keep trying or send on loan. One problem at Villa is that he isn’t a natural fit for the 10 role in Gerrard’s system (and certainly not if we’re playing a single 10).
  23. Personally I’m more interested in xG and xGA.
  24. I’m not convinced either of them would be a great 10 tbh. I’m also not convinced we should return to two number 10s, at least not unless the role is redefined. Having two relatively static players playing centrally hasn’t worked and I doubt it will. I also hope we get a good price for Luiz, but his value is likely a bit lower already as he enters his final 12 months.
  25. Nakamba was used by Smith in games where we expected to have very little of the ball so Liverpool would be a typical Nakamba game. Still a bit strange to start him there with almost no warm-up minutes.
