This is what I’m concerned about as well. Playing well under Bielsa could also have a lot to do with that manager’s extreme (and possibly harmful) fitness regime, and he was still a Bielsa fitness monster while playing for England last year.

A midfield three with Carney and Ramsey in it would be extremely attack minded. In Gerrard’s system with a back four and full-backs attacking, the midfield would probably have to be quite defensive. The current midfield with McGinn and Ramsey is a bit too attacking as it is IMO.

Interesting to see if he keeps his place for England. He’s shown nothing at all after the latest injury so will surely have to impress in August/September.

Villa have also outperformed their xG quite a bit this season (48 goals, xG 41.09) which would suggest they aren't that wasteful.

When Gerrard first came in Luiz was injured, but when he got back Nakamba and Luiz started together and played really well. Luiz had an excellent game playing as an 8 against Man City, to name one.

After being out for five months, to suddenly start against Liverpool can't be easy and I thought he did well. Classic Nakamba performance, lots of energy and broke up their attacks a number of times but also gifted them the ball once or twice. Nakamba and Luiz starting together has usually been good for us but it also demonstrates how much we could use an even better DM -- a destroyer who is also confident in possession.

On a positive note, his distribution makes it less likely one of the super clubs steal him.

We don’t know his future salary do we? It’s likely somewhere between 150k and 475k.

At least we didn’t sit back nearly as much as Spurs did last week.

Can’t fault the performance overall. Taking Nakamba off and moving Dougie wasn’t smart. Konsa still a liability. Luiz brilliant first 60 minutes, Digne class.

Still don’t love Martinez distribution.

Feels harsh to keep picking on him, but Konsa has really felt like the weakest link so far. Team overall has done well.

Apart from gifting them that super chance, Nakamba has played well. Mostly.

If Nakamba plays well tonight I’ll be very impressed, considering he hasn’t played for 6 months (not counting those 3 minutes).
