  1. Without FFP, as long as the owners were happy to spend there would be no reason not to want expensive new players. FFP does however make failed signings risky. If Villa spend big again and Gerrard still isn't successful, it's unlikely Villa will be able to go again and invest heavily under a new manager. I'd guess that's why some could be wary. I would feel better about it all if there were more positive signs already, but personally I don't see not spending as an alternative at this point. In Gerrard we will have to trust, a little longer.
  2. If I understand the FFP rules correctly, loans make it easier to eventually sell players and make a ”profit” as long as enough time has passed since the signing. Buying Sanson for 15m on a 4 year contract, amortization 3.75m per year. Loan him out one season and sell him next summer (2023) for 7m, after 2.5 years and 9.4m amortized. 15-9.4=5.6 means Villa can show a profit of 1.4m on Sanson. Possibly.
  3. Yeah, they’ve definitely done well there.
  4. They’re not that high in some other rankings though, Elo which is based on relatively recent results has them at 11th while Fivethirtyeight, which is mostly based on squad value, has them at 15th. Villa are obviously lower in all rankings but still curiously high at Fivethirtyeight (22nd).
  5. The money lost is a problem but I’m afraid the optics of finishing 14th is worse when it comes to recruiting. I think part of the reason for investing in January was to finish the season strongly, with the summer window in mind.
  6. Coaching and general leadership I suppose, creating a strong collective where people are happy to work for each other and not afraid of making mistakes et c
  7. Don’t know, I’m not ignoring it. The interesting thing for me is how they became good (apart from signing Bruno G)
  8. Teams will always beat each other back and forth. An irritating sign however is that Newcastle managed to beat Arsenal tonight by showing a lot of heart and fight. It’s rare to see something similar from Villa. Comparing players, most would say Villa have a better squad than Newcastle — ours is certainly more expensive.
  9. Liverpool seemed pretty happy when Klopp extended his stay though.
  10. I thought ”he’s French so must be good” mostly applied to defensive midfielders, and that centre-backs ideally should be Dutch.
  11. At least there is no third division in Premier League 2.
  12. Replacing Bielsa with a second rate Red Bull ambassador has created a legend in which the greedy owners killed the golden goose or something. They even named a pub in the city after Bielsa, and the mourners apparently gather there to cry on a weekly basis.
  13. He’s very good IMO (but if we lose next season’s opener at Huddersfield people will still question if the midfield issue really has been solved and if he is that much better than Nakamba)
  14. But didn’t we pay 15m or so? If we got 10m it wouldn’t be much of a hit. Not sure we will of course
  15. Maybe that's where Josh Brownhill comes in.
  16. At least before 2018 Villa had the excuse of not having extremely rich and ambitous owners.
  17. When Gerrard was appointed Beale was described as a genius, the mastermind behind the scenes and so on. By now that image has perhaps faded a bit, but it still looks like the actual coaching takes a back seat compared to "attracting players".
  18. That’s probably right. And looking past the squad, it also remains to be seen if the current foundations are strong enough to get there (manager, sporting director, ceo et cetera).
  19. Looks ambitious except for the centre-backs. Not sure Martinez, Mings and Caleta-Car are confident enough in possession to build successfully from the back.
  20. I’ve heard Purslow made it clear in fan consultation meetings that the owners’ big aim is Champions League. So Villa will have to step up a bit.
  21. I still don’t want to be 8th and not even qualify for the conference league.
  22. The optimism since the NSWE takeover has turned into a feeling of light disappointment for me. It’s becoming more difficult to believe a top 6 finish could actually happen, although we realistically shouldn’t be that far off looking at current squad and available resources.
  23. Forest fans are really ecstatic to have him back if Twitter is anything to go by. Good luck.
  24. I think they’ll sell him, having just signed two strikers (Haaland and Alvarez). Around 60m, maybe slightly less? The real surprise next season would be Alvarez outscoring Haaland btw. Could definitely see him as a more natural fit for Pep’s system.
