  1. Playing out from the back is a bit like stat padding for centre-backs, lots of very easy passes. Not doing that would make Tarkowski’s pass completion lower, like you said a higher share would be made shortly after winning the ball back.
  2. I can see Newcastle buying an extra Gulfstream to fly London based players in and out of training daily.
  3. Would be interesting to see him play at right-back for us.
  4. Pope is the best shot stopper out of the three England candidates and probably makes the least silly mistakes. But at Burnley he’s never really been able to develop playing with his feet. I hope Ramsdale gets to play in the World Cup. The pressure on an England keeper in a big tournament is insane, and when he inevitably makes mistakes it could crush him.
  5. The main thing about their escape is that Lampard now can stay as long as he wants. An unlikely local hero.
  6. If Liverpool knew what that kit means they would be filing a complaint already.
  7. The third kit? Might actually give this game a pass
  8. They've been impressive lately. Last 8 games they've got 16 points out of 24 possible. Beaten Man U, Chelsea, Leicester, Palace. They've also managed to come back and win after being behind.
  9. Gerrard’s and Purslow’s strategy of going for slightly older players will make a big difference when it comes to transfer fees. Players aged 28+ usually go for much lower fees. Wages will be the issue going forward, and attracting players in the first place will be the main challenge. I can imagine Villa spending relatively small sums on fees this summer.
  10. Turns out Joe Gomez wasn’t seriously injured the other day, so I guess we might buy him after all.
  11. Gerrard and his staff basically decide everything. How the team is set up, if we play out from the back or not, direct style or slower build-up, press or sit back out of possession, in transitions speed up or slow down, what parts of the pitch we try to create overloads. More passes are misplaced when distances between players are longer which depends on the set-up. Players usually try and do what they're told, and quality players can do a better job following instructions.
  12. After six seasons under Dyche, Tarkowski's qualities on the ball are pretty much unknown. Could be good, could be crap.
  13. The Everton fan got away easily, wish Vieira had time for another volley strike.
  14. Less aggressive in our own box would be good, but he also has to stop playing no-look passes and backheels around the halfway line or in our half. High risk/reward is great but only when you're further up the pitch.
  15. If Gerrard decides to play both Coutinho and Buendia as 10s, they will have to be reliable goal scorers as well. Personally I believe we need to make more runs and stretch defences, while having two number 10s mainly looking to play through balls risk being a bit of a waste.
  16. That’s how I saw it too, Burnley were happy to let us have the ball about 5 yards outside their box. We seem very dedicated to playing our way through centrally with short passes, no matter how packed that part of the pitch is. Like trying to thread a needle. Villa not getting that many quality chances is shown by the xG being relatively low, 1.00. Getting a great DM would help us defensively and could also result in us having more possession further up the pitch, but it won’t give us a more varied attack or help us create better chances.
  17. Yeah formation yesterday was a bit of a mystery seen from the tv. Some apps showed McGinn as one of the 10s and his average pitch position was further up than not only Ramsey but further than Chuk as well. Buendia defended pretty deep.
  18. This season, and tonight’s game even more so, has also shown the current midfield is extremely attack minded. I’m not sure even the best DM will give us a balanced midfield if the other midfield options are McGinn, Ramsey, Buendia, Coutinho and Chuk. They all charge forward and are happiest in the final third.
  19. After seeing the Newcastle-Arsenal game, the possibility of Newcastle winning against Burnley should be about 90%.
  20. Don’t think so. They’ll get a massive boost from surviving together this season. Wouldn’t even be surprised if they finished ahead of Villa in 22/23.
  21. The most irritating thing about the end of this season is that Frank Lampard seems to have made Everton into a confident team. They’re now capable of coming back from being behind, and grinding out ugly wins. How the **** did that happen.
  22. Understanding that we don’t score enough doesn’t necessarily mean he knows what to do about it. Every manager would want to have quality in the final third.
  23. If Burnley could qualify for Europa League a few years ago with more or less the same team as now, maybe we can too? But seriously, of course we should strive to improve. Squad and also tactics, coaching, fitness levels, everything needs to be better.
  24. His final ball has improved this season (along with other aspects of his game) so I’m not that concerned about this game.
