  1. Wolves did the exact same today against Liverpool. And West Ham went from being 1-0 up at half time to losing 3-1 (thereby losing 6th and Europa League). Villa may have a habit of throwing games away but aren’t alone.
  2. Similar at Anfield. Wolves took the lead against Liverpool, had 1-1 with 7 minutes left and ended up losing 3-1. That’s what the top teams do, it’s draining to play them and they can usually force a couple of late goals. Still shit though.
  3. Would be some coup this, considering the number of clubs that have been after him.
  4. I agree he was great in the Euros. The question is if he can become that good again, would feel nervous about spending big on someone who hasn’t performed after his latest injury.
  5. I almost forgot about the dropping of Mings, got to say that wasn’t Smith’s proudest moment. At the time Mings was getting more shit than usual online and it felt like Smith, being under pressure, was trying to please Villa Twitter. Mixed signals were sent when Villa’s defence collapsed, Konsa was sent off and Smith had to ask Mings to come on after all.
  6. I suspect Purslow is more than happy to go on trips like that, doesn’t have to mean contracts are about to be signed.
  7. Director of Football is a very important role, where being well connected is key. Can’t see why becoming manager/coach should be the only alternative for ex-players.
  8. Whenever Gerrard is portrayed in his managerial role his focus is always on recruiting. It seemed to be much the same at Rangers, mostly about him building a squad and being frustrated the club couldn’t do enough. If he’s good at this (let’s assume he is), maybe his career choice should have been Director of Football instead of coach? It seems to me he’s more into those aspects of improving a club, rather than working with player development.
  9. But to summarise the season: no disaster, but disappointing. The summer signings didn’t help us nearly as much as expected. When Smith began to experiment with formations to fit them in, it was obvious this would be a season to forget. Then under Gerrard some positive signs but very short-lived. Starting to worry about the atmosphere at the club and the overall leadership (not just Gerrard) when good players come here and become bad. Or when they leave and become good.
  10. Low spending teams finish in the top 10 every season, Brighton and possibly even Brentford do it this year. If signing three more 30m players can’t get us three more points and thus into the top half, why do we even try?
  11. For the record, I’m not convinced we will be successful next season. But considering the investments made, it seems odd to be happy with anything other than some kind of european football. That’s what the owners have been aiming for all along. What’s been happening for a while now is fans gradually lowering their expectations, to avoid being disappointed again. That’s fine but the club shouldn’t do the same.
  12. Surprised to see so many happy to finish 10th. We’re only 3 points away from that now and God knows we haven’t had a smooth and successful season. With the investments Villa have made (and will continue to make), to finish in the top 10 really isn’t a big ask. We should be able to do that with the current squad. 1. My aim would be 6th and Europa League. 2. 7th and Conference League would be fine too, for now. 3. Bottom half would be unacceptable, as I expect the club to keep investing in the summer and the excuses will be wearing thin. I believe the owners would agree.
  13. Define better? Coutinho’s ball control and technique is superior, few players in the world have what he has. Buendia however is more industrious and currently more useful to the team.
  14. They’re fine with Benzema for the moment, Mbappe was meant to be the future. They will need a younger player for the long term. But who can rival the commercial appeal of Mbappe or Haaland?
  15. Yeah why not. The manager and his selected celebrity players can slowly walk around and scare the opposition with their enormous star quality.
  16. The signing bonus alone is a lot bigger than the transfer fee when Neymar went to PSG. So this is basically the most expensive transfer in history, and he’s not even moving. If he pays 50% tax on the bonus he’ll get 150+100+100+100=450 million after tax for three years. Suddenly Neymar and Messi are paid peanuts in comparison (roughly 50m per year). PSG managed to break football again.
  17. If Mbappe gets to pick manager and sporting director, plus has the final word on transfers, that makes him the most powerful person at the club by far. Being manager at PSG already looked like a humiliating job. Having to please ageing primadonna’s who can’t be arsed to work off the ball and must never be subbed. Now with one of the players effectively in charge, if Mbappe doesn’t like your gameplan you’ll have to make a new one. What decent manager would take the job?
  18. Isn’t that what usually happens when people choose sides on forums, any excuses will do. I’m still annoyed about the club appointing people with relatively low level qualifications to key roles in a financially huge project. That goes for Smith, Lange and Gerrard.
  19. He would need the rest of the team to play really well to even get close to that. But I like the ambition.
  20. Well, Gerrard loves McGinn and Watkins so to get rid of those players you would have to begin with sacking the manager.
  21. Same here really, but I found this: ”Bassey found game time hard to come by working under Steven Gerrard, but since his departure the Nigerian has played every game under the leadership of van Bronckhorst.” https://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/19761943.rangers-ace-calvin-bassey-hails-amazing-giovanni-van-bronckhorst-details-new-level-intensity/
  22. Was it Bronckhorst who started playing him as CB, after Gerrard had left him on the bench? In that case he could either make a point of not coming when Gerrard calls, or definitely make a point of coming to show him.
  23. Looking at this season’s xGA stats the most striking thing is Wolves. Their xGA is 55 but they’ve only conceded 40. That’s an insane difference — if Jose Sa had conceded as many goals as he ”should” have, Wolves would currently only have 40 points and be 15th in the league table instead of 8th. For Martinez the difference between conceded goals and xGA is small. Our outfield players however have outperformed their xG by about 7 goals.
