  1. Is he available? And wouldn't he expect to be nr 1 where he goes?
  2. If we intend to sign a striker it could make sense to let Ings go. Especially if Gerrard plans to play one up top. Ings is a lovely player but has previously been better with a strike partner -- at Burnley, Southampton and lately also at Villa.
  3. This narrative about Suarez not missing chances is based on the past, these days he misses about as many chances as an average big 5 league striker. Even if few goals are scored after players make long sprints, being explosive is still important.
  4. The need for ball playing centre-backs doesn't disappear because you have a good DM. Successfully playing out from the back, and playing through press, is about not having weak links. If a team builds from the back all players will potentially be involved, making and receiving passes sometimes under press. BTW I found a piece about Tarkowski from The Athletic last year where he describes his roles as CB at Burnley and Brentford. He claims to be naturally confident on the ball. https://theathletic.com/2312403/2021/01/11/tarkowski-defending-football-soccer/
  5. It looks like similar reactions to when Bruno G signed for Newcastle in January. French media and competing clubs were shocked then as well and accused him of not taking his career seriously,
  6. No no no. If people think Watkins isn’t scoring enough I really wonder what they’d say after a season with Lacazette.
  7. Yeah, that Hyundai contract is huge and will last for at least a year. I asked a mate in advertising how much someone like SG could make from such a thing, and it sounded like he wouldn’t be depending much on his Villa salary in comparison.
  8. I think Mings is decent in possession. Tarkowski can be fine too, just harder to judge in that respect after being at Burnley who don’t play that way.
  9. When playing out from the back and playing through press every player must be reliable, move and make themselves available, it doesn’t work otherwise.
  10. No wonder people get frustrated when they believe their grandmothers could score in the Prem.
  11. If he’s after 100k per week and a five year contract, you’d imagine the sign-on bonus to be of the smaller kind.
  12. Five years is a long contract at that age and he could be difficult to loan out with those wages. Questions would be 1) how confident is he playing out the back and maybe 2) if Villa wanted to play with a higher line in the future, would he be comfortable with that and would he have the pace?
  13. No, the difference wasn’t clinical finishing. In the City game they had 72% possession. They made 24 attempts to Villa’s 4, they had 5 shots on target and 10 off target (2 and 1 for us). They had 13 corners, we had 1. And so on. They were extremely wasteful.
  14. No new CB? I’d guess at least one of those is at the top of SGs list.
  15. Most likely is still those two play on either side of Kamara. But I would like a new CM too.
  16. I do believe it was one factor but probably not the biggest. It’s a respectable answer to give in that situation, saying you signed because the money was great doesn’t sound as good.
  17. Gerrard surely has more pull than Smith, but neither can compare to proven coaches like Tuchel or Guardiola. Having a famous manager is great, but someone who can promise to improve you is even better.
  18. Spending big money to find the perfect striker has to be the least effective way to improve a team, considering the price of proven strikers. Getting a top goalkeeper probably has the best ROI, but maybe a case could be made for going big on a centre-back or DM as well.
  19. Valuations begin to drop with 18 months left. With 12 months to go they are down a fair bit (which is why we won't get much for Dougie)
  20. At Transfermarkt he's the 6th most valuable DM globally, age 23 or under, at €25m. Their valutations are always far too low, but values relative to other players usually aren't too wrong. Maybe £45m with a recent contract.
  21. According to Capology, Kamara had €27k per week at Marseille and the club's top earner has €115k per week (which is roughly £100k).
